Until it expires, then she will need to use the FF side of it which does not need any activation etc.

Re: Why do I have to have two cards??

Had a slight issue with my new Qantas Cash/FF card over the weekend, nothing major but a little bit annoying.

I booked a two night stay at the Perth Ambassador Hotel over the weekend through a third party website which did not have the ability to add my QFF number. So when I checked out of the hotel, I presented my new FF card to the front desk to swipe and register my purchase. After a couple of attempts, the front desk advised me that there was some sort of error with 'my account not being recognised'. I was a bit puzzled at that point and asked the staff to print me an invoice so I can do a manual claim.

It later occurred to me that it had something to do with the magnetic strip at the back of the card is used for Mastercard purchases which I have not activated. Maybe its time to dust off the old card again...

I saw another post like this recently. I doubt activating the card will work. While I haven't compared the two mag strips , I suspect the old cards would contain QFF number and probably some name details. The new cards would contain MasterCard information and probably also still contain the QFF information. It is likely the card readers at the hotel need to be upgraded as they get confused by the additional track information.

Has anyone done reads of the old style cards and compared to the new ones?

For your reference, hotels can manually record your Frequent Flyer details in the booking if your card cannot be swiped. This will ensure you earn the Qantas Points as usual for your stay, without manual follow up on your end.

I've passed on this example to the relevant teams, who will in turn send a friendly reminder to the Perth Ambassador Hotel of the alternative process. Hope this remains a one off experience for you. :)

Re: Why do I have to have two cards??

Have my Qantas Cash Card loaded with HK $ for trip this week, was at Woolies checkout paid for goods, realised I'd used the cash card instead of my Amex, both cards same colour black, converted back was only AUD$69, fee was $3, ah well.
