Why $14? Special card promo is $20 back. And you can use the Woolworths from Special for anything, including top up Opal card, which would be $20 off.

So that also doesn't make sense. If you got $20 off, you got $20 off? If you pay $180 for a $200 gift card, you got $20 of free money?

If you use the Special card to buy another gift card, that's a separate issue. Also, you don't need to buy another gift card when there is a purchase fee, you could also buy when they are on promo.

I don't think the calculation should be lumped together. No one is telling you to buy say an EFTPOS gift card when there is a purchase fee, it's your fault (if I could put it this way) that you don't wait until there is an actual promo on the EFTPOS card.

I’m not arguing the relative merits of that strategy. Simply clarifying the context of @tinkybelle’s comment.
