There was a comment in this thread some time ago that most of the flights on the SYD-MEL-SYD and vica versa was beset with delays and cancellations.

I read the recent Bitre March 2019 report that cancellation on that route was 5.4% - most attributed to weather. And overall that route measures at least 70% roughly for ontime performance
& the definition of on time performance ? Something like within 15 mins of schedule. SO the fligtht SYD/MEL actually takes ~1 hour, but if any airline takes less than 1 hour 50 mins it can be considered "ON TIME"

Bit of a joke when you think about it. Even a turbo prop could do it in 1 hour 30-35, as long as not using bloody awful shopping centres called SYD or MEL.

On time performance definition is the same for all aircraft types and all airports.

“Could do” is not the same as “actual”

It would be a foolish airline or airport to want a tighter definition or assume probs at SYD or MEL or congestion on the airroutes would not affect their “adjacent” airports.

delays are a constant at SYD & MEL. At Bankstown, Essendon not an issue, so massive time savings for anyone who flies out of these ports. Not sure about Moorabbin, as it's Australia's busiest GA airport.

+ there's the issue of waiting for checked baggage to arrive. At Bankstown & Essendon, passengers can probably collect their bags at the aircraft, ie. virtually no waiting.

Neeleman (Moxy in USA) has the right idea in only flying to 2ndary airport. Big airports are going to become like the A380, ie. unwanted

Until the small airports become big ones and are then themselves unwated. Small airports have a niche but to claim they will drive big airports to become unwanted is ridiculous.

Yes but a) US airport infrastructure is significantly better to begin with, b) Moxy is looking at RJ's, not props (specifically A220) and c) the secondary airports are much further from their counterpart main airports, in areas with reasonable sized populations. The airports they're looking at are more like AVV than MEB or BWU.

unwanted doesn't mean not used. However, many don't like big ugly airports & will avoid them like the plague.

Many airports can take A220s. They are not RJs.

MEB & BWU are not busy. This is the major problem with SYD & MEL which can't be fixed.

Forget Moorabbin, there's no room there. Doing my time in GA at all these airports, delays definitely occurred! Granted not to the extent (at times) as the major airports, however I had been told the circuit is too busy, report again in 10 mins.

Coming into the BWU and MEB circuit areas we got holding (due to medical traffic) and also sequencing with MEL arrivals. The same happened during peak periods on departure. I was in the runup bay requesting clearance only to be told SYD departures can not accept me into their airspace at this time and to wait around 15mins for that. The only way around that would be to depart outside of controlled airspace and step it up underneath the control steps until a clearance was available. By the time you did that, you might as well have waited for the clearance and then have unrestricted climb.

So delays can and do happen at all airports and don't even get me started on BNK on a weekend and that's all uncontrolled!
