Hi Guys,

a friend recommended i post here to work out the best way to do a status run.

I'm currently a Qantas gold and was looking good to get platinum but then had a some work cancelled on me so it looks like i'm going to fall about 280 points short of getting platinum.

My membership year finishes on March 31 and at the moment i'm sitting on 1075 points, with 325 needed and a flight to melbourne scheduled for next week.

What is annoying is that i have a heap of trips lined up for May with a possible US trip in April.

What do you guys recommend?

Cheers

Gordo

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I would suggest that the cost of getting 280SCs would not be worth it and to just settle with being gold and maybe next years travel might work better. Platinum is not worth paying a lot extra to get

If going to the US, I would of course suggest doing an AA lack of Challenge and getting AA Platinum status :)

Hi Dave,

I was sort of thinking that 280 points would be a bit of a stretch.

please excuse my ignorance, but i have no idea what an "AA lack of Challenge" is, but you have piqued my interest :D

thanks Dave that is awesome,

now i'm not sure if i'm misreading it, but given that sydney to la is 7000 miles, does that mean you could potentially qualify with one return trip?

Cheers

I concur that 280 SCs is a lot to chase for a Status Run. If you were 80 short it may be worthwhile.

Given that you feel there is plenty of upcoming travel for you in the wind it may be worthwhile getting those additional SC's. However, only you can answer that.

Where do you live? What sort of free time do you have for this? And what is your budget.

Very hard to do domestically at such short notice however; 'Tis possible to do some 4 segment return trips for $1840 and 160 SC's each; that'll cost you ~$4600.

If you live in SYD then, internationally, you could do it for ~$2400 in airfares by travelling to BKK for $1203 in WHY then use Finnair J to travel BKK-HKG-BKK for $580 and BKK-SIN-BKK for $590 on consecutive days.

e.g.
  • QF1 SYD-BKK March 14th,
  • AY91 BKK-HKG & AY92 HKG-BKK 15th,
  • AY97 BKK-SIN & AY98 SIN-BKK 16th and
  • QF2 BKK-SYD on 17th.
This would earn you 420 SC's with the added bonus of WP points for BKK-SYD.

BTW, You already have QF SG. This is the Qantas FF equivalent of AAdvantage Platinum. So perhaps the only real benefit for you of joining AAdvantage and doing a challenge might be the better reward redemption rates of the AAdvantage program.

2 RTs on LA to AKL would be better (for 320SCs). Nested of course to take advantage of cheaper price ex-NZ.

SYD-AKL-SYD J class on LAN USD966 (AUD1,246) & AKL-SYD-AKL J class on LAN USD600 (AUD775): Total SC's 320, total air fare cost AUD2,021. Total FF points 6,725.

(AY based MR: Total SC's 420, total air fare cost AUD2,373. Total FF points 20,990.)

looks like i might be getting to see lots of different parts of the world :D

I stand corrected. I didn't think LA ex-Oz was that much more expensive than ex-NZ. Of course could bring the cost down by flying economy one-way (but this would require some extra SCs to get to 280 required).

ah, ok, now i get it.

its sort of like one of those team building exercises where you have to get everyone from place to another using a straw, a matchstick and blowtorch.

How rude of me. Welcome to AFF gordoF2 :)

You haven't seen anything yet. Stick around for even brighter ideas to enhance* your flying experience.

* true meaning used not airline/FF-speak.

Kiwi Flyer knows this flight better, but LAN Chile has a flight that comes from SCL (Santiago) to AKL and then to SYD and back every day. You can book these flight online using www.LAN.com .

They are offering discounted J fares between AKL & SYD. As they are a oneWORLD partner airline you earn J level SC's for travelling Business class on them, in this case 80 SC's each way.

You makwe one booking from SYD to AKL return and another from AKL to SYD return.

Nested bookings are when you have two bookings between ports in a manner similar to as that described by Kiwi Flyer in the previous posts.

Hmm, the OP was asking about a "domestic" status run, and all our suggestions have involved destinations such as AKL, LAX, BKK, SIN, HKG

Just goes to show where the better value status runs exist
