Natural wine? Anyone else a fan?

Hey all,

Don't post a lot but read this forum often.... I recently travelled through France drinking excellent vin natural - or wine which is unfined, unfiltered and with no additives. Some have a funky smell on the nose, but it blows off to reveal stunning drops...

Personally enjoyed the Jura region (Arbois is a beautiful little town) and had some great natural poulsard wines, and then Beaujolais of course was great with some amazing natural gamays.

Julie Balagny has become a favourite producer of mine... does anyone else drink vin natural, and have any recommendations?

New member here, and I registered to reply to this. Big fan of natural wines having made the leap across from craft beer.

Julien Labet, Renaud Bruyère and Adeline Houillon as well as Octavin are great. Also love Ganevat and Overnoy even if they're rare and precious in Australia, and the price reflects that.

Australia has a lot of good producers as well.

Are they widely available in Australia, or do you have to go direct to producer?

Australian producers are available pretty widely - Blachearts and Sparrows or independant 'natural wine' stores will sell nice drops by Lucy Margaux, Jauma among others. Well worth a try for sure.

Want 'natural' wine? Go to Georgia (country, not the state).

Pick grapes
Crush with feet
Juice drains into 'quevri' below ( a large terracotta vessel) with skins
Seal, leave for 4 months
Enjoy!
( see my trip report on ‘Uncorking the Caucasus' 😊 )

Are Temple Bruer wines considered "natural" ?

I have had one of them, but it had 9 years bottle age and was over the hill.

only says organic wines on the website, don't think they are natural wines.

Second Ruggabellus, actually one of our most refined producers. Their Sallio which is a Semillon/Muscat/Riesling is a great parallel to Georgian/Northern Italian border style of natural wine.

Other great and unmentioned producers are Momento Mori and VHS.

Have never tried Natural Wine. Where can I buy them in Australia ?
Without knowing where you live, most trendy city wine bars should have some on offer to try by the glass before you commit ;):p.

P&V Wine and Liquor Merchants is a great spot to drop into. Staff are knowledgeable.

Online, I use notwasted.io - free delivery and 10% off when buying six.

You should have no problem finding somewhere to sample some. Look also for 'pet nat' wine.

Just remember: the palatability is exponentially inversely proportional to the floridness of the language used to describe them... ;):p
