Mystery Flights are back as a holiday!

Mystery Flights have nothing to do with the airlines, therefore unlike perhaps Mystery Breaks, we're not guided by yield management or any other departments trying to fill seats.

I remember doing one of these on FlyBuys as a kid. Ansett from memory? We were given Perth (which would be great for someone seeking points and SCs!) but it was a day trip so Perth was pretty silly...ended up switching it to Brisbane. Ended up being a pretty big expense - one flight was free (fly buys points), but the rest were paid.

We never used our Fly Buys card again after that. Definitely not worth it. :D

Its funny that not only were our Facebook posts about 'Mystery Breaks' targeted by employees of another company, but they have joined the conversation here on AFF!!!

Perhaps they are threatened by your arrival into their niche market? I would be!

Mind you, hijacking your thread was a bit underhanded, though I commend her for using her real name instead of hiding behind some alias:

Kim - perhaps next time, you can approach Admin to either a) advertise on this site or b) to ask permission to push your products.

Oh and PS... I intend on taking up the VA mystery breaks option as these appear to be great gifts for friends and family, particularly those who don't get to travel as much as they would like.

Come on, its Friday!!! :p

No earning of Status Credits on this (yet), but you do earn Velocity Points.

Just returned from a mystery flight to the Gold Coast and the Velocity website shows "Melbourne-Gold Coast (Not Valid For Earn)" for the trip up so apparently you don't get Velocity Points either

AFAIK, the points earn is on the package price, rather then on the flighst themselves.

It's a "Blue Holidays" (or whatever they're called now) package trip, so you should earn points based on the total package spend.

I like the concept but not sure it is cost effective as a single traveller where I can tailor my own holiday far cheaper.

Now daily mystery flights would be better but again wouldn't want to end up in SYD/MEL/BNE regularly as that would be simply boring.

I gave my best friend one of these as a Christmas present for two nights. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up.

Has anyone else tried this yet? - looks like only one person (post 48) for MEL-OOL.

I'm curious about what the accomodation and the transfers were like.:?:

VA should have a $100-$200 seat filler mystery flight, like the old Ansett ones

There and back in a day. I'd go just for the thrill of not knowing where your going.

Thinking about it.. is there really any way they could run a mystery flight at a loss. I mean its a seat filled that otherwise would go empty. The cost of managing the service (staff time, onboard costs, fuel etc) would be minimal and surely covered by $150 - $200 cost? Given there's no fixed destination it wouldn't be a lost sale from someone who actually wanted to go to a specific destination. If you did a single day trip you could easily make it carry on only - so minimal weight.

Surely a low cost, highly profitable thing right? What have i missed - IE why doesn't every airline do this?

Well it might (slightly) decrease the amount of people buying regular fares. That's why I've always thought these mystery flights never really made a comeback.

I would have thought any decrease in people buying regular fares would be covered by an increase in people flying who couldn't otherwise afford too. I mean the reality is if your going to take a holiday and buy regular fares you generally have a destination in mind, hotels booked, tours/activities planned. Plus your going to go for more than one day.

I know personally when i did my mystery flight as a child - there was no way my parents could have afforded it otherwise. Plus as a further profit to them - my flight to Sydney sparked an interest in travel but also to return to Sydney so i could explore more thus re-occuring revenue.

That's right they don't want to butcher their existing market by converting
holiday makers to mystery flyers.

Fares are a lot cheaper now than in 1996 so you can just create your own MFlight for about $120pp return Mel-Hba Jet*. Fly down grab some fish and chips , wash it down with a Cascade and head back.

I received a gift voucher for one today, I'll book in the next few days and report back what happens.

You have to book at least 14 days out, that kinda sucks, I'd like to have the attitude "Hmmm, I've got nothing on, I might spontaneously use my mystery trip voucher" But I guess they've got to plan and so on.

Any the result for my mystery tour is...

Hobart jokes aside, I'm looking forward to it. Everytime I've been to Hobart for work it's been rushed and I've never had much time to explore.

Only thing I'd like is to be on the earlier flight, I arrive in HBA at 1250 and leave at 1310. I'll have to make the most of the time!
