from news.com.au:

HOLD on to your seats and be thankful you weren't onboard these terrifying flights as we take a look at some of the scariest plane landings ever.

From nearly hitting the heads of beachgoers to swinging violently from side to side, these videos show some extreme and amazing landings.

It probably doesn't count as a "landing" but a very close friend of mine was a passenger on BA 038 last year, and she says it (the crash landing)was the most terrifying moment of her life, but she is full of praise for the pilots and crew and for BA,itself for that matter and still flys with them almost every week in fact, and says she would never choose another airline.

Great vids, but I can't help thinking that the last one; of the KE 744 landing at Kai Tak; was just a teeny bit reckless. You can always go-around, Captain, and line it up properly.

My worst some years ago was two go arounds at BNK in an F28 with a vicious cross wind with a third success with the captain flying parallel to the runway, chopping power and having the wind blow the AC onto the strip.

It fits the definition of a great landing - well I guess I am assuming the aircraft was still serviceable and available for its next planned departure. Unless there was an engine scrape or something bent underneath. Or perhaps it just took a long time to clean the Captain's seat afterwards.

A friend of mine who flew 743 & 744 to Kai Tak says the scene of the KE 744 landing was not all that abnormal.

He did add that some of the departures toward the buildings were even scarier :!:

I don't think I ever saw a departure in that direction!

How come I never get these extreme landings? No fair! :(
(Well except for Kai Tak but I was a little kid then and probably didn't appreciate things as I do now)

Fly to OLP.

It's in remote Australia in an area with sand dunes. Now bit of a lesson in nature, sand dunes, in general, are perpendicular to the predominate wind direction. Of course, it is easier for an engineer to build a runway in between and parallel to the sand dunes. Basically, most of the time there is a cross wind and i've had many fun landings there.

Certainly, fun enough to make the Zurich landing look very normal.

After watching the last video (sideways KAL 744) I noticed that there were 15 other videos, including an interesting acrobatic display featuring an SAA 743 doing things you would not expect - great vertical climb, plus a RNZAF 757 low level fly-by and vertical climb (great engine roar as it goes by).

They are worth a look if you missed them first time around! There are various other worthwhile landings etc attached to this and the other vids too.

I am glad that I have never experienced a landing as scary as some of these landings.

Is it really appropriate for onlookers to be that close to the flight path of the landing aircraft?

Landed in NRT on a QF A333 a couple of years ago, the Narita express was stopped on the track due to the rain and wind (A long night i can tell you !)
It was actually ok the last 20-30 feet, but prior to that a lot of people were reaching for the sick bags and it was one of the most bumpy rides i have had... i was in 23K, imagine what it would have been like in the tail....

my vote for consistently scary landings and takeoffs in our region goes to Wellington.... the weather, the wind, the runway - always good for a thrill......

I have experienced some very hairy landings at NRT during typhoons, including an NH flight from JFK in a 773 when we went around three times before finally getting onto tarmac. I'm not a nervous flyer, and I had every faith in the NH pilots and in Boeing's machine, but that afternoon was not an experience I am keen to repeat. Such pitching and rolling there was! I don't know how many times the Captain was prepared to go around before writing the whole thing off, but I would probably have headed for HND after the second attempt. Still, it all worked out in the end.

I haven't flown into WLG enough to have experienced the wind at it's worst, but there are some great youtube videos of landings there in high winds.

+1 for Wellington. You always get your money's worth;)

Actually my scariest landing was actually while I was the pilot..

Flying into Avalon for the airshow. just got my PPL. Coming into the the temporary "runway" which in fact was the taxiway.

Copped a 20 knot crosswind gust right as i was flaring and it pushed the plane sideways off the runway... Had to throttle up and perform a go around.. let me tell you a B52 looks damm big when you are trying to fly over it at 100 feet (as it was sitting further up the taxiway)!

A good story.

Most pilots think that any landing where they are not at the controls is scary as pilots generally tend to be control freaks.
