Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge or experience of what Virgin Australia's policy is if you miss your flight due to arriving at the airport late, on a Saver fare.

Do they require you to book a new fare at the applicable cost or will they move you to a later flight at a certain set cost?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about the written policy but on the occasion it happened to me they were more then happy to move me to the next available flight. I'd say if you have gold status then the same would apply to you.

taken from the fare rules displayed when making a dummy booking online:

"NO SHOW/LATE CANCELLATION: If you do not fly, and do not notify Virgin Australia within 24 hours prior to your flight's scheduled departure time, you will forfeit any fare paid and/or your Velocity Points (as applicable)".

of course, i'm sure ms1 isn't alone in simply being moved to the next flight at no cost.

Recently travelling to Sydney with a colleague who I met at the airport. We went to the lounge, had breakfast, went to the gate to board, handed over my boarding pass in the priority line and at that point my colleague remembered she didnt check in (day trip no luggage). Flight was closed and she had to pay for a ticket on the next flight. Unfortunately for her, she has no status and does not fly a lot and I was unable to assist (as a platinum) as I actually boarded the flight to get to Sydney in time for the meeting. I would think if you fly reasonably regularly and have some status they would assist in most cases.

Thanks for the replys.

I know that Tiger Airways will move passengers to a later flight, if they happen to miss their's, at the cost of their change fee which is $80 from memory.

I would hope that Virgin have something like this in place for unforseen circumstances, not that they are required to of course.
It's a bit of a gamble even with status by the sounds of things.

Earlier this year I showed up late to a flight after being caught in traffic on the Bruce Hwy (at Stupid O'Clock in the morning!) and they just rebooked me & checked me in on the next flight to SYD.
At that stage I was flying 2 or 3 times a week, but had not yet made Silver Status... So I guess, as with many things it depends on the mood of the person behind the counter at the time?!

My experience was almost three years ago. Travelling without status, we tried to check-in at the airport kiosks 19 minutes before departure (flight closes at 20 minutes). We were offered seats on the next flight for $50 each.

My experience was that they put you the next available flight. You will have to pay for a difference in fare if any + a penalty and for me it was AUD50.00 more and an hour later to reach my destination.

Missed three flights in the last year each time due to traffic, each time they have put me on the next flight at no cost (but don't bother calling the call centre, they will just quote the fare terms and say you have to pay)

At the time I was Platinum

Only happened once for me, but was moved to next flight no charge.

Colleague (no status) missed bag checkin cutoff by a few mins, and had to pay $40 to be on next one. Was told that it was a set change fee, and that if the flight had taken off already then he would be a no show and have to pay more.

Other 2nd hand anecdotal evidence that if you are gold/plat they will just bump you onto the next one. QF routinely does this so would expect them to do same.

When still SG with a colleague who was PS they just bumped us to the next flight no charge.

Similar to others my experience is that it is at the discretion of the person you speak with, or at least unofficial policy to offer something if available. Back in November 2010, on missing a connection in CBR (two separate tickets, sale fares, no status, OLCI, long story) I was offered another flight for the cost of the change fee. Or perhaps the fare difference? Either way it was a cheap option. One, which I gladly accepted as I really didn't want to be stranded there. More than reasonable given the terms and conditions of the fare.

Last month I missed my flight due entirely to personal stupidity - damn 24 hour clock!

'Fessed up when I finally got to check in and was quickly put on next flight no further questiosn asked nor further payments made.

In the interests of equity, I have had the same expereince with JQ on a cheap fare.
