Mis-use of hand luggage

I am tempted to do that - but am a little reserved and I dont want the SBOG who has been in the pub since checking in 3 hours before hand landing one on me. I tend to subtlely flash my BP in the direction of the GAs and that often gets their attention and they are reminded to clear a path for the special people ;)

I still don't know why a hatch is not provided in the floor to drop either the excess baggage and/or carrier to the hold (non-747 of course) to remedy this common situation, which has been subject to previous posts and probably now swirls arounds the Sandpit.

They are supposed to do this at the gate before you board the plane. Look next to each aerobridge. There's a slippery slide type of thing. Its to drop bags down to the baggage loaders.

I have seen them use this.
In SYD last Boxing Day I was boarding an Asiana flight and the GA stopped a family taking onboard three of those huge checked plastic bags. They were annoyed that they were being stopped and told the GA that the Checkin agent allowed them. I do not believe it as the bags would have difficulty being placed on top of an economy seat let alone under it or even in a 777 overhead bin. I boarded before I could find out if they were charged excess luggage but the GA was telling them off because he believed they deliberately did this to avoid excess luggage charges.

Oh I agree. I am the Adelaide QC at the moment and the guy accross from me has, a suit bag, a brief case and a small carry on bag. When is enough enough. Come on Qantas do the right thing and clamp down on this. No body minds a couple of brief case sized items but damm!!!!!

I usually fly with a Roll a Board bag and a briefcase, but I make sure I am in the first 20 people to board in order to make sure that I never have to place the bag behind me....

IainF's rules for flying.

1 No carryon luggage behind you.
2 No reclining on flights under 2 hours
3 Forward Window still gets you off faster than midplane aisle
4 Keep asking for the exit row right up until the gate
5 No food on flights under 2 hours
6 Always have Ipod & book ready in case of verbose seatmates
7 An eyemask can be used for any trip. 40 mins of sleep is better than none.

There are probably more, but these are the main ones.

Yep, I try to be at the gate just prior to boarding commencing so that I can place my briefcase above me, and not 10 rows back.

I only worry about that when flying in USA or on US-based airlines. Elsewhere I can usually rock up late as I like and still find room in the bins. That way I have less stress, less time spent sitting in a seat onboard, and more time in the lounge (hic or working).

I expect to be able to get on the plane when I like (as a Platinum FF), which, like Kiwi Flyer is just before departure. If I'm going to be on planes for 24hours, I do all I can to minimise this time. I then expect to have luggage room available above me. I believe this is reasonable and possible if the airlines enforce the luggage rules.

I'm going to Europe next week, with the first hop to Asia economy (I'm paying). I'll take particular notice of how well they enforce the luggage rules.

I used to always leave the QP at the last moment, but flying Y in peak periods meant that I seemed to more often than not miss out on locker space anywhere near my seat. Hence I try to be at the gate early.

If an upgrade to J has been confirmed then that is a different story.

At least they call for premium pax first. On domestic QF latley I have not seen them call premium pax first in a long time, and even when they have three scanners, no premium line just 3 all in scrums. Jeez the plane aint gonna leave without you, especially if you have checked in luggage. They will call you so many times its not funny.

Calling for premium pax first on US-based airlines often doesn't seem to make a difference as group numbers are routinely ignored in a big scrum. The people managing the BP reader should enforce. Some do, but many do not.

I find with AA, that they do actually enforce it, and the pax all know this, when the call goes out everyone takes a few paces forward, stop, look around for the premiums, when there is no more movement they dive in. If you are sitting in the AA, when it boards you have none and buckly's of getting on early, or with priority.

Do you mean AC (Admirals Club)? True also for FL (Flagship Lounge), where it exists.

Yep I did mean AC (Admirals Club where the food and booze ain't free). I'm still trying to wake up, its only 9.30am here.

Have another coffee
Have you tried the "coffee" in most AC's? With the exception of the new Terminal D at DFW where they have decent coffees for purchase or redemption with a drinks voucher, the AC "coffee" is generally undrinkable. So its a matter of purchasing one from a coffee shop in the terminal and carrying it onto the aircraft along with the 3 roll-aboards, 2 laptops, purse, suit pack and kitchen sink.

Sure, once.

From Reggie's post I conclude he is nowhere near an AC (not sure about NRT time zone though).

I always put my carry on in the compartment directly above me, even if someone else has already put something there. I ask the person next to me if it's theirs and if there's anything breakable in it, then squash mine into whatever space is left. If it's not theirs, I take it out and put mine in it's place, then wander around looking for another place to put the lost bag. Usually the hostie will help with this.

Good on you, Dude!

There have been times when I have opened the locker above my seat to find it quite full, even though there was no-one yet seated in my row. My usual reaction is to swear loudly (PG rating if there are kids nearby, otherwise it's R or X depending on mood) and then none-to-gently start to rearrange the bags. Usually someone a row or two away will then jump up and help and/or remove their bag to another location (like above their seat for a change!).

I haven't actually removed a bag and given it to an FA to sort out, but it's a bloody good idea when some banker has shoved their bag into the first gap they saw and then wandered down the back to their seat.

BTW - I always carry a soft bag with clothes plus my laptop bag (sometimes I use the Qantas one that has room for other stuff) and have never been challenged domestically or internationally. Checked luggage is for people with too much time on their hands.

Cheers,

Andrew

Anyone doing this to my bag would soon find a very snug place that it would fit.....

Unless, of course they are willing to pay for the very expensive medical equipment I carry with me..
