thread bump again. as above I'm after advice on wether this leg would be viable. Its in different fare class to above so this is why im asking again. I have a flight into LAX from Cali, COL via San Salvador on Avianca in Business class. This is due to land at 12.35pm.

Im now looking at booking my Australia to LA flights on SQ also in business. Now the leg on SQ leaving LAX departs at 3.45pm. So this gives me a lay over of 3 hrs and 10 minutes. As both these fares are in business I can obviously get off/on quicker then my previous post above being both flight in economy.

Last month a I did an Avianca flight from Cali to LAX in economy with a connection to VA also in economy and I reckon it took me 90minutes from when I got off the Avianca flight to when I was through security into TBI for my VA flight. Wasn't rushing either as my layover was 4 hrs 20 minutes.

So my judgement on this would be that I would be fine especially with business fares. Obviously barring some major drama I should be fine to book this correct? thoughts fellow members?

What might make things smoother is if Avianca can through check your bags onto the SQ flight & beyond. Both AV & SQ are Star Alliance members but not sure if they have an IATCI agreement to issue SQ boarding passes however even if they don't they should still be able to check your bags through as long as there is an interline baggage agreement between AV & SQ.

Factors that could affect the above happening are:

a) some airlines aren't able to have more than three flights on a bag tag & your scenario is 4 flights - assuming you're not stopping off in SIN on the way home

b) some airline staff will only tag your bags to LAX as adding on-carriage flights (despite being in same alliance) in two separate pnrs could be 'too hard basket'

c) some airline staff will say "well you have to pick up your bags in LAX anyway" subscribing to the notion that there is no advantage to tagging the bags on to SIN & beyond. The two problems with that theory is firstly, having your bag beyond LAX allows you to be able to drop off your bag on the transfer belt in LAX immediately after clearing customs and immigration rather than drag it to the next terminal & checkin all over again.

Secondly in the event of a disruption where you miss your SQ flight as a result of Avianca running late they could wipe their hands of you if they only checked your bags to LAX because they've met their obligation to get you & your bags from CLO to LAX. However if your bags were tagged to SIN & beyond & you miss your SQ flight AV are obliged to pick up the pieces as they've undertaken to get you from CLO to SIN (or final SQ city in Aust).

If you're on a commercial ticket in J on SQ LAX/SIN/xx_ I'd be inclined to attempt the connection as I'd be fairly confident SQ would re-book you if you were disrupted assuming there are J seats available.

If your ticket ex LAX was an award ticket I'd probably overnight in LAX & not risk it because you could be in a world of hurt if airline A ran late causing you to miss airline B when travelling on an award ticket issued by airline C.
