To maximise your mileage on domestic flights, try using the "Red E-deals" section of the QF website, and taking the least direct route.

Eg: You can go NTL-PER taking routing NTL-BNE-SYD-PER or NTL-MEL-PER or NTL-CHB-SYD-PER. If you've got the time, the mileage you accumulate (along with the status credits) is well worth it.

I've also seen SYD-PER routing via Alice.

The price is usually no different to the most direct route.

Scott, just found your thread on Flyertalk and read about your interview with the journalist. Hey was looking for a photo, but who wants to see the CEO and COO of an airline - nah, give me a FF anyday. Cheers.

Last year booking a Perth-Melbourne ticket, one routing it came up with was Perth->Kalgoorlie->Adelaide->Melbourne, which I may have taken up had it not taken 13 hours to get to Melbourne :)

Note though every routing the system comes up with is not bookable. Going MEL-CNS and back last year, the only routings it came up with on the forward journey the days I wanted to fly were MEL-BNE-TSV-CNS and MEL-HTI-CNS, neither bookable, and on the return sector CNS-AYQ-SYD-MEL, again not bookable. Rang their internet people who said that these routings shouldn't be appearing, a glitch that they were working to resolve. Luckily I got FF redemption anyway for the dates I wanted.

But the Chairman of the "Mileage Runs Club" would have to be Dave "thadocta", who has astounded some of us with his inventiveness for getting from A to B, via the rest of the alphabet. For example, quoting him:

But seriously, I am flying to ASP next week via BNE and CNS, so that would have to be a record (and seriously, that is the cheapest fare that was thrown up!)

He's obviously got nothing better to do that day and REALLY wants to be a WP  :p

I only tend to do SC-chasing activities on Intl sectors...where I have the time!

Actually chasing those SC's for the UC's they bring, nothing more, you understand? And with the trip in question, it gives me a chance to visit the QC, since BNE-CNS and CNS-ASP are not CityFlyer services, so drinks need to be paid for in steerage - so I need to stock up beforehand, do I not?

And besides, why would I want to be a WP? Apart from the 100% bonus miles, the free access to lounges (you don't need to be flying), the access to first lounges, the jump up the op-up list, the guaranteed seat if holding a full Y ticket, I really cannot see what the difference is. :D

Dave

Of course it would have nothing to do with the list you provided, none of them make any sense at all

Dave, doing it for nought (actually for the good of the Qantas FA's), just out of the goodness of your heart - you're my hero!!

Here's a question for you mileage junkies.... what is the least expensive means of getting to a tier, say Platinum. I haven't given it much thought, but if you went MEL-CBR-SYD and back a few times on web specials (ie 40 points for about $200), you get there for about $7K.

West Papaya to Kirkwall on BA (franchise) full Y incl tax is £15 e/w = 20 status credits. Flight takes less than 5 minutes. Make sure you get your return boarding card as turnaround time is 7 minutes. You can do two return flights a day. Plus two return flights a day to North Ronaldsey from Kirkwall for a very similar price. So you can earn the 160 SC's per day for £120 - $AU300.
:p
Problem is you have to get to the group of islands North of Scotland.

nice one michael!

so far ive found the most cost effective way to get SC is bris->adelaide .. $300 return, 40 sc

ive done it a few times (just for the sc) .. got some weird looks from guys at ticketing

Just ask Dave thadocta, it must be Qantas's computer that gives him only an itinerary availability NTL/SYD via the rest of Australia at the minimum Qbiz prices!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

A lot of my SCs are racked up NTL-SYD return ($340 or so full Y, 40 SC) as I love in NTL and often work in SYD. For the budget-conscious, red e-deals make the return trip available for around $200.00.

There's also the connection factor - in my previous job I would hit the US 2 or more times a year, NZ 10 or more times, and every interstate capital once a month or so. Beginning and ending each trip with NTL-SYD and SYD-NTL racks up a load of additional credits, that earn upgrade credits, that can be used on the routes where there is a J or F service (unlike NTL-SYD).

I've done SYD-CBR-MEL-ADL in J, 90 SC's for $642 (or thereabouts) a few times, works out at about $7 per credit.

Scott, I am not sure Mrs shillard would appreciate you discussing your sex life on the internet. :D

Dave

Mrs Shillard: "You're very naughty".

Mr Shillard: I'll get you for that, you cough. :)

:D Dave, you are quick...

Scott, great point about SYD/NTL...my flights are mainly capital cities ex-BNE and BNE/AKL 2-3 x year, SIN/BKK/HKG 2-3 x year and regular RTW once/year.

I've just turned over into new year (after 2,575 SC year), I'm actually looking forward to lesser year this year (so is Mrs LW2B!!).

See you at one of the FT QC meetings.... , I'm sure that between us we can get Dave back...he's better at stirring up those on the FT AA board though.

Everything listed above is pretty much sage advice, and you will find more of it on www.flyertalk.com in the qantas forum.

Status, unlike points, really does have to be earned by parking your cough on an aeroplane and riding it out. I've recently found that NTL-SYD-CBR-SYD-NTL can be done on full Y (NTL-SYD-NTL) and J (SYD-CBR-SYD) for around $750, earning 100 SCs and 4,000 points, plus the points for buying the ticket on Amex or CB Visa.

Handy if you're falling 100 or so SCs short of jumping a level, or requalifying.
