I may need to rack up a few extra SCs in a couple of months time to ensure that I retain platinum.
Anyone have any good Mileage runs that are available on QF?
I'm in Perth, so the FNQ milk runs aren't much use.
The best looking one at the moment is the infamous Bus run PER to Paraburdoo then Tom Price by Bus and back. As a plat I'd get 4460 points and 40 SC for about $370 and get a wonderful 8 hours in Tom Price as well!
Has anyone had any luck getting Mel to Syd via CNB or similar on a red-e-deal lately?
Also given the introduction of jet*, do you reckon QF will offer the really cheap deals on actual QF flights or hold off for a while?

I know that FlyerTalk has a mileage run forum, but that is almost entirely US or international based.

With the direct PER-CBR flights now operating, for a little more cash you can get 40 SCs and 7684 points for platinum. Only disadvantage is that the flight from Perth to Canberra is a red-eye, departing 2300 and arriving 0600. The return flight departs Canberra at 1910, arriving Perth at 2050 (these are daylight saving times). So for a very tiring day, you could see the War Memorial, Old and New Parliament Houses and one of either the National Library, National Gallery or National Museum. :)

I'm flying over to Perth this weekend, as it's a long weekend in Canberra. Got a red-e-deal for $390 return.

I apologise (because you're in PER and this might not be any good to you, but....if you can route somewhere via ADL - or, if anyone else is listening).

ADL-BNE is a great one to do, because it is just over the 1000+ mark. You go into a zone 2 (just) and get 20 SCs each way instead of 10 for a zone one discount economy flight.

I love this particular flight. :)

So do I, icemann, so do I  :D

It is probably the best flight in Australia for just being over the magical 1,000 miles (I think it's 1008) and being relatively cheap (particularly lately!).

I managed to get a Red e Deal fare: Sydney to Perth and return, via Adelaide going, and Melbourne return. 60 SC all up, and about 5,000 points.... all for $255.

This was back in January. I scored NZ for $246. return, and Syd - Darwin return for $302.

I've always been a 'bronzy', but i'll make SILVER this year.... like, WOW!

regards,

Gordon, how can you be QC life (which is Gold) but only silver/bronze for the FF side of things? I thought QC life was Gold across the board.

I bought my Life Memebership, therefore, I still have to work my way up!
I didn't think anybody got 'LIFE' on the basis of SC.....

regards,

I did & I just beat my colleague who has been with FF for ever by a month.

Are we using a misleading term?
LIFE membership means 'for the term of your natural life' (was that a movie?)..... if you get your QC membership through SC, then isn't that reviewed after twelve months? Whereas, those who have paid for their LIFE membership will retain that status for the term of their natural lives....

I'm sure that's how it works....

regards,

1. 14,000 SCs will get you life gold = life QC membership
2. Term of your natural life OR THE LIFE OF THE QANTAS CLUB, as was the case with the Golden Wing Club Life Members

Nope - you can be a lowly Bronze and still be a QC Life. Somewhat in this case would get nil status bonuses, access to QF, BA, AA and US lounges, and priority check-in and baggage on QF only, as would a QC Life member who was Silver (although with priority check-in and baggage on all OneWorld carriers).

QC Life gets you exactly what QC membership gets you, it just means that you don't have to pay a yearly fee.

dajop, of course, you are correct. I wasn't thinking of the total SC accumulated, as you have rightly stated.... I was thinking of the yearly total.
14,000 or even 7,000 SC is MORE than I will accumulate in MY life time!

Risking actually going back on topic  , I'm actually formulating the idea of a weekend MR soon as Mrs LW is going to take her mother to Lismore for a weekend.

Once I know the dates (May/June), this will give me a chance to put together a run...obviously ADL and PER will certainly figure in it...it's just whether it's 1 night or 2 (as I could leave on a Fri night and fly to PER).

I'll let you know what I come up with, The Pope

Recently, I was doing a bit of a 'milage run' from Sydney to Christchurch.

I picked up a really good fare online with Qantas, and thought I'd do some duty free shopping.... as well as pick up those SC and FF points.

The problem I encountered, was that I arrived in Christchurch at about 1300hrs. and was to fly out again at 1830hrs.

My intention was, not to go through customs, and double back to the Qantas Club and the 'airside' shopping area.

However, a roving customs officer spoke to me, and eventually had the senior officer and a NZ police officer interview me over my 'intentions'!

These guys claimed, they had never heard of anyone flying in, and flying out the same day.... just for shopping and FF points / SC.

Well, I had to hold myself back from laughing....

The copper asked me in a very sombre manner: "Gordon, I want you to tell me what medication you're on".

If i had of started laughing... well, I'd probably be sheduled on the spot, and taken away for a little chat with 'the doctor'.

Anyway, I think in the end, they thought I was either a 'nut', or I just might have been someone with a 'purpose' in NZ. As long as my paperwork was in order, I could go. I still had to go out through customs, and then come back in again.

I just escaped having to pay the departure tax, as I was now in NZ for less than six hours after clearing NZ Customs.

So, my point is, be prepared to be 'questioned' over why your are in a country.... especially given the current climate we are in (terrorism alert)

regards,

Getting Silver

Gordon, is it worthwile to do mileage runs to attain silver? There isn't much privileges associated with Silver isn't there?
I was thinking of trying...

Sydney to Uluru via Melbourne, return. 30 SC each way. Average of $7.20/SC.

 I'll take PS over plain bronze anyday. :D
- Qantas Club/Business check-in when the queue is 200 people deep
- free upgrades from discount economy to business

Silver

- free upgrades from discount economy to business

How?

I think its wiser to buy Qantas Club membership once and for all instead of spending maybe an extra one thousand a year just to maintain Silver.

Fly a lot (obviously not as much as WP or SG but enough discount economy flights to maintain silver), be in the right place at the tight time, never ask for an upgrade (and don't expect it) and when you get one smile.

I will never forget trip SYD-BKK-SYD last Dec/Jan. Paid for discount economy (a little more expensive that time of year) and got upgraded for free to business class both ways (story in another post on this board) and must have had a smile as wide as the sydney harbour bridge (first time ever travelled in business class).

That is important for a lot of people but lounge access does nothing for me. I think the premium plaza lounge in Singapore costs around $30AUD, not sure of the exact amount, for 5 hours use. The holiday means a whole lot more to me. I fly to thailand twice a year and some domestic travel hopefully guarantees silver for another year and some of the benefits mentioned earlier.

The latest QF sale for NZ domestic has fares around NZ$5-6 / SC.

Unfortunately they dont seem to be loaded yet or something - cannot get them to come up on any date or routing (and its early on the first day of sale).
