Hopefully another addition to SkyTeam.
Would be nice to get a decent earn on MH between Australia and KUL

Rumour has it that LATAM will not be joining following exiting OW, and VS haven’t joined despite significant DL ownership. It seems that airlines are moving away from alliances in favour of bilaterals, or even coexisting in alliances with bilaterals (such as QF with EK, KL, AF & MU).

So if KL/AF get control of MH, SkyTeam doesn’t necessarily follow.

The reason the earns on MH are so bad is because MH won't pay their partners for better earns.
It's their decision.
I don't see why that would change if they change alliance.

This is not a rumour - LATAM specifically said that they weren't going to join another alliance the day after they announced the Delta deal. Various media outlets have been (incorrectly) reporting a possible LA SkyTeam entry despite this.

Is this the case? Or is it more "the reason why QF earn on MH is so bad is because MH won't pay what QF wants to charge for better earns"? (at least in the premium cabins). You accrue business class travel on MH to AA, you get 125%, you accrue to BA, you get 125%, you accrue to CX you get 125%. You accrue to QF,on a "competing" route you get closer to 100%.

Admittedly at the discount economy end of the scale (the three lowest economy fares) MH don't earn anything on partners, but that's hardly unique amongst FF programs.

Avios (BA) earnt flying on MH:
Economy lowest (L, V, S)25%
Economy low (K, M)50%
Economy flexible (Y, B, H)100%
Business (J, C, D, Z)125%
Business Suite (F, A, P)150%

Avios (BA) earnt flying on QF:
Economy lowest (M, K, L, N, G, Q, S, V, O)25%
Economy flexible (Y, B, H)100%
Premium economy (W, T, R)100%
Business (J, C, D, I)125%
First (F, A)150%

Earns on MH are only bad on routes QF competes on aren't they? Surely if it was MH "charging too much" the earns would be bad on all routes.

Hence why I said “Hopefully”.
Wishful thinking on my behalf more than anything

Qantas doesn't fly to KUL but that the earn rates between Australia and KUL top out at the flexible economy level, even in full fare business.

Because QF views KUL routes as competing with SIN routes, and the MH AU-KUL-EU routes as competing with the QF Kangaroo flights.

Albeit there is differential treatment between MH and UL for example (who fly MEL-CMB daily)

QR, CX and BA are probably all better examples than UL. UL, I think, is more about traffic to the subcontinent. With ~12 hr connections in CMB in both directions, I am sure that QF don't think UL as much of a competitor on the Kangaroo route.

Completely agree ... the earn rates on MH for QFF ex-AUS is, for the lack of a worst word, pathetic !
Agree also, and I think it would be understandable if QF flew direct to KUL also, but its their way of preferring their the route via SIN and then onto Jetstar.

If you are careful you can book QF flights to KUL via SIN with an MH sector SIN-KUL.
MH no longer serve alcohol on flights less than 3 hours duration but they do have a J cabin on their 737s and anything is better than deathstar.

You have it the wrong way around. It's partners that set the MH earn rates on their own metal.
That is how FFP agreements work.

So if the QF earn rate is less for MH...... it is QF that set that rate. Blame QF. Not MH.
