Plane Crash In Indonesia | Merpati jet skids off runway in Manokwari

A jet carrying about 100 passengers skidded off the runway into a shallow river as it landed in Indonesia on Tuesday, injuring some 20 people, officials said.

The Merpati airline Boeing 737 broke into pieces as it bounced off the tarmac at Rendani domestic airport in Manokwari, West Papua, director general of civil aviation Herry Bhakti Singayuda told AFP.

Thankfully it appears the passengers and crew are safe. Unbelievable that it comes so soon after that other crash caused on landing in poor conditions.

it seems unusual for a 737 to be used for a journey of just 340km. perhaps i am showing my ignorance though.

I would suggest the road network in this part of the world isn't exactly fabulous and a 340km trip may take an entire day to go by road so air travel is essential, as it is in many parts of Indonesia, even for short distances.

Only heard a snippet of this on the radio today. 737, broke up on landing, and then I was wondering who, but they moved on to the next news story.

Good to see no one was killed.

I take it Merpati no longer fly to Aus? I recall flying them MEL-DPS-MEL back in ~1998. They seemed ok - sounds like a factor was a common issue in Indonesia - a very wet runway...

Merpati, Sempati, Air Paradise - all been and gone from our shores....

(Makes me wonder how Strategic will go on the PER-DPS flights, but they may do ok against Jetstar, Air Asia and Garuda)

Alaskan Airlines 'Milk Run' is the shortest jet flight. I think one of the legs is only a 12-minute flight.

.....or as with GA in Jogjakarta penchant for ignoring 30 or so coughpit warning alarms & membership of the 'real men don't go around club'.

They still fly DIL-DPS as it was a popular destination for UN personnel on their R&R breaks if they didn't like doing DIL-DRW in a Herc.

It's Merpati & I'll die if I want to.
