I find the Melbourne Qantas lounge in the international terminal quite underwhelming - are there any alternatives if you're flying J?

If you have WP or above status you can go to the QANTAS FLounge which is amazing.

If you have SG status then you'll be limited to the various oneworld J lounges I presume and perhaps the Emirates one.

There is a CX lounge open during parts of the day, but I am led to believe that it makes the QF J lounge look rather good.

Technically the QF-EK partnership should allow you into the EK lounge but I suspect that they will direct you back to the QF J lounge.

They try but last time in MEL they let +1 and moi in. We were just about the only ones there at one stage.

I used the CX lounge a few weeks back - it wasn't great, but at least there was a bit of life in the place. And it had lighting :p

There's also the MH lounge.

To enter the EK lounge you'll need to be on an 081 ticket issued by Qantas and flying Qantas, the entry staff will write down your ticket number.

sadly still only SG

I visited the CX lounge twice on the same morning - my 'first' and 'last' visits - and I was holding CX BP - to say it is underwhelming is a gross understatement - I transferred over to QF J and at least it appeared 1st World - food and drink offerings in CX near non existent - but of course we all like different girls.

The EK lounge is the best J lounge at MEL. If you're on a QF or EK-issued ticket you can use it.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and feedback - looking forward to trying out the EK lounge unless I can find someone to guest me into the F lounge - cheers and what a great community

When are you flying out of Melbourne?

When are you flying out of Melbourne?

December 15th on QF9 - have put a note in the December lounge meetups- Qantas have cancelled the original connecting flight so I have to leave earlier and will be in MEL about 17.30

The fact that UA send their J pax to the CX lounge in MEL should be an indication of the quality of the lounge. Yes you'd think they'd use NZ or SQ but.... nope!

I was surprised how lame it was. Seriously.

Isn't MH closing their lounge(if it even still exists?). I had thought they were anyway.

Only been there once years back, the QF J lounge is much nicer

The MH lounge was definitely still operating a few weeks ago; no sign of any pending closure.

If you are travelling in business class on a oneworld airline you can use any oneworld lounge; so in Melbourne you can use any of QF, CX or MH. I have encountered receptionists who try to direct me to the lounge of the airline that I'm flying, but I just remind them that I'm flying in business class so can use any oneworld lounge and also point out that their lounge is so much nicer than the others.

I've tried them all and CX is clearly the worst of the three in Melbourne. It's quite small and had an extremely limited food selection last time I popped my head in before moving over to the QF lounge.

The MH lounge is quite nice, but it's only open for a few hours prior to MH flights. The best thing about the MH lounge is they have a chef on duty who will custom prepare a noodle soup for you.

I quite like the QF lounge in Melbourne, particularly the fresh juicer, and that's where I usually wind up.

In other parts of the world, I generally find the lounge of the home country's airline is superior (e.g. the MH lounges in KL are much nicer than the CX lounges in KL) so I usually stick with that unless I'm provided with intel about a particularly good oneworld lounge at an airport I'm going to. To that end, my next international business class trip will see me in NRT, HEL, AMS and HKG so if anybody has any tips for me, fire away (particularly HEL and AMS as I've not been to either of those places for more than 30 years).

Not that there's much choice in HEL but the Finnair lounges are good. Both are nice spaces but the premium lounge is especially nice as it's quieter and has better food. Premium is only open to OW Emerald... Although I read they sometimes let in sapphires when it's quiet in the afternoon.

Make sure you leave time to try out the sauna!
