MEL to JFK on QF93/107, enough time to transit in LAX?

Would probably be un-economical for QF107 to run LAX-JFK if it didn't have the pax from Bris/Melb connecting to it. The last time I connected there were 74 people from the Melbourne flight. On the return from JFK, J downstairs was 3/4 full and of the 8 people around me 4 [50%] connected to the Mel flight. The flight was late into Lax, and 3 buses were waiting for the transfer of Melbourne Pax, say 30 people a bus = approx 70 - 90 pax

Busy thread ...

I booked online a Qantas Sale fare MEL-JFK via LAX on this very route (QF93, QF107, QF108, QF94):
Code:
Your Flight

Flight 1: From To Flight Departure
                                                                  Terminal
Thu xx Nov 07 11:20 Melbourne 07:30 Los Angeles QF093 2

Flight 2:

Thu xx Nov 07 08:50 Los Angeles 16:50 New York QF107 4

Flight 3:

Mon xx Nov 07 18:40 New York 21:50 Los Angeles QF108 7

Flight 4:

Mon xx Nov 07 23:15 Los Angeles 09:30 (Wed) Melbourne QF094 B
In all honesty, I am more concerned about making the QF10late/QF94 connection.

Yes, the return connection is tighter. The Melbourne plane waits, as it did with me on that last flight I had, but the problem was the luggage doesn't have time to make the transfer !! Got to Melbourne, no luggage, went to QF desk will all the other pax from JFK and told it would be probably still on QF107 because of tight connection, they will deliver later in the day after it came down from Sydney. They even arranged with Customs for the commercial goods I was carrying, so as to save me having to go and collect.
But I got the impression that this lack of luggage happened quite often when QF107 was late into LAX.

Of course the return is affected by the regular delays on QF10Late.

Another viable option may be to route MEL-SYD-JFK, taking QF107 from Sydney, vian LAX to New York. Just need to leave MEL a little earlier to get to SYD.
That is a good option but there is no availability on QF107 from SYD.

I did try to go out via SYD on QF107 so as to be on the same plane the whole way but the was no D availability.

I have done this a few times - it is no worries - I have never missed it and they do wait.

There is actually a lady who comes to the immigration line and if you are on that connection the move you out of the queue, we got our bags and left them with some others and then she actually took us through the back passageways of the terminals and we made the flight fine!

I still stress though when I am in the queue but really there is no need - that flight will wait as long as your flight isn't majorly delayed arriving into LAX (mind never has been).

Last time I took the flight there were all 6 of us in economy on the qantas flight... it was awesome!!!

Just to concur with some of the posts above, when I have been waiting to clear immigration at LAX after arriving on QF93 they have called passengers to the front of the line that are connecting to QF107.

Thanks everyone for your comments/thoughts. :)

I've been ticketed today on my trip so I'm going ahead with the QF93/107 option.
This is the start of a DONE4 starting next week, looking forward to the trip and the 1000 SC's I'll be collecting to earn PLAT while I am away.

I'm thinking on trying my hand at a trip report, I've got 11 sectors in J across QF/AA/BA in US/Europe and Asia to experience :)
