Hi Red Roo,

Received your PM, however I can't reply to PM as my account is new.

Do you have an email address where I can forward the details, can you please PM it to me?

Thanks

I've just replied to your private message. :)

A good outcome, I wouldn't say it to be fantastic though. At the end of the day it is $500 for economy flights, which is only slightly cheaper than their competitor eg NZ, and if I was Qantas I would have easily honored those fares too. The goodwill to honor them will outweigh the few hundred dollars lost in revenue, plus I bet only a few dozen tickets were ever bought. It won't break Qantas' bank, nor will the few seats lost on a 300+ seat economy cabin is going to make a difference - in all likeliness, the plane probably would have had empty seats anyway. Anyway at $500 I was tempted to fly economy, I did check orbitz quickly but nothing came up on the dates I searched so I didn't bother running around to find these. Qantas has $1150 fares to USA but even at that price, it doesn't interest me.

I beg to differ. I reckon thousands of seats were sold at the "mistake" price. Unlike other mistake fares that were distributed on here, and ozbargain and FT and other blogs, this one went way beyond that. Somehow, alot of non-aviation enthusiasts were onto it. I actually found out through facebook when one of my old work colleagues posted it. This one wasn't like expedia.br, but rather it somehow went mainstream.

...but rather it somehow went mainstream.

And in part that possibly fed in to the decision to honour the fare. These weren't snapped up by 'savvy frequent flyers' who were aware (or ought to have been aware) of it being a mistake. This was mums and dads taking their kids to Disneyland, in economy, who simply thought this was a good deal. There was no intention to keep this quiet, or take unfair advantage.

How many were sold? Don't know if we will ever find that out. Don't know if the off-set will appear anywhere in the annual accounts as a one-off write off or something? Had this gone to DOT we would have had an estimation of the number of complaints lodged.

We will never know the numbers for sure but we will disagree on what we think the numbers are - that's cool. I don't see any regular AFF member having booked these fares though.

I booked one for my partner. $595 USD return in February next year.

I agree that this was not a clear mistake fare. It still cost a substantial amount of money (almost $800 AUD), and is within 20% of previous sale fares and what other airlines charge.

Lots of things would have played into the decision to honour, but consumer protection laws would surely have been a significant one. Not to mention that I don't think they'll be losing any money on this - it's on QF metal, they'll sell some exit row seats and some feeder flights, and generate goodwill for future bookings.

I would not be too sure....
I have not yet travelled on one of these refurbs in anything other that Business, but it looks like this will be changing in January. ( ;) )

I don't see why not. These fares are suitable for everyone, those who don't mind Y got a super cheap fare and those who like to travel in premium cabins could book PE and later potentially even upgrade to J using points.

i got one and now its got me thinking of status runs in LOTFAP after my year in domestic SG purgatory,

it'll be worth it to QF if I do a run and push all my dom bookings back to them to enjoy WP again...

I don't think they really had a leg to stand on in terms of cancelling, I don't think it was really ever in doubt they would honour them. Way too many repercussions for not doing so. They were very cheap but nowhere near ridiculous for economy class. In the cheap international fares discussion right now there is $158 flights to Manila and back.

Anyone booked on qf11 on 31/10?
If you are wp or above dibs on the guest spot

Sorry, I'm enjoying the U.S. in January.

I'm a semi-regular AFF'er, Facebook makes it easier these days and I'm on here a lot less as a result.

I'm also looking at the SC run options for our trip but I'm a little limited and it's looking like circa USD$2k for 340SC. Need to clear a window for a little investigating!

So four members did book.

I am not saying that AFF members need to fly premium, I was just trying to point out that not many of us here booked ... so I trying to come to an inference why I believed only a few dozen tickets were ever sold - and not in the thousands. If four people booked out of a few hundred who viewed this thread and the mistakes were only available for a short period, then it is less than 2% figure. We must remember that people here on AFF are also more inclined to travel (eg yourself saying for upgrade reasons, another thinking of a status run) than the regular punter on other forums, OzB and so on, so the figures must be less than that.

Jeeez. Bitter much?
I may or may not have forgotten to unintentionally or intentionally include a smilie!

Good luck to those who rolled the dice. Even the ones who booked 3-4 return trips for the family. I would have booked one myself but my calendar is booked solid at least 6 months in advance. ;)

Oh well, I had booked my Y+ fare to the US in January already. But to DFW!

Hello all,

I was quick to swoop on this almighty deal through flightnetwork. Melb- LAX $680au Nov-Dec. I was sent an email confirmnig payment ect, however 1 hour later flight network cancelled my tickets. I was never sent a Qantas ref number, but do have a flightnetwork ref number outlining my intinary and payment made... Do I have a leg to stand on here with Qantas? I called Qantas and they said I require a Qantas ref number for them to honour the flights. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers!

Hi and welcome to AFF.

Unfortunately you're not alone with respect to bookings made on flightnetwork. From reading around, it looks like flightnetwork is one of the agencies that doesn't necessarily offer 'real time' fares. What happened is you gave your dates and credit card number, but when they went to ticket, the fare was no longer there.

As such - you don't have a contract with Qantas, and probably somewhere in the terms and conditions of flightnetwork there'll be an explanation of how their booking system exactly works, with caveats that the fare must be available when they go to ticket.

No contract with Qantas means you can't follow it up with them. In future you probably want to ticket with an agency that does real time ticketing.

Edited to add - here are the terms and conditions from flightnetwork's website:

Online Fare Reservations, Misprints, and Product Availability

In the event that more than one set of conditions apply to the same trip then the most restrictive conditions of both sets apply to the entire journey. While it is possible to make bookings electronically for some of the travel services, the act of reserving a product electronically does not imply a final confirmation or commitment by FlightNetwork® to actually deliver the product reserved at the prices indicated. FlightNetwork®, endeavors to provide current and accurate information on its website, however any misprints or errors may occur. Accordingly FlightNetwork®, reserves the right to change the prices, fees, charges regarding the goods and services available on its website at any time and from time to time without any notice or liability to the user or any other person. Also, FlightNetwork®, cannot guarantee that goods and services advertised on the website may be available when ordered or thereafter FlightNetwork® reserves the right at any time to reject, amend, cancel or terminate any order without prior notification. A final confirmation is only given by FlightNetwork® once the company has issued the airline tickets, a final invoice and delivered travel documents for the product reserved. Terms and conditions of the confirmation and sale will vary depending on the product reserved and are generally set out in the company’s website or other notices issued from time to time.

IMO there was no rolling of the dice, it was win-win for the consumer no matter the outcome. In my personal situation either

1. QF cancelled the fare and I'm reimbursed 100%.
2. QF honored the fare and I've picked up a return ticket to USA for USD$444.

Kicking myself for not jumping on multiple bookings.
