MEL-LAX Business Class on Qantas - direct on 747 or via SYD for the A380?

Although now i'm thinking about using some of my points to request an upgrade to First class on the A380 leg...how many other opportunities will I have to fly 15 hours in first class for nothing more than 48,000 points?

I assume 1st class on the A380 is a step up from the 747, so better to do it on the outbound leg...and if i don't get the upgrade, i can always try again on the inbound...hrmmm...

Do IT, I recently did SIN-SYD on the A380 in First and I can report back that it is all and more... The service, seat, tv, bed, food/beverage etc is first class and 100% above the 744 First, even though I can say the 744 service is still excellent.

Taswegian, I agree with you 100% on that: have to fly SYD-LHR a couple of times a year and I can't think of a better use of my points than to upgrade to F - I have found that I arrive at my destination so much more relaxed, with a good 'nights' sleep along the way.

Fior anyone out there - if you can - DO IT!

I would definately recommend you fly the A380. I just flew back business class last night and it was excellent. I hate flying (very nervous flyer due to an incident years ago) and I didn't want to get off. :D

Ok, my upgrade request has been locked in for a few days now, of course I won't find out if i'm successful until 5 hours before the flight, so it'll be a nervous wait!

The video Qantas have on their website of the A380's first class suite has me crossing my fingers so hard that i'm not sure they'll come apart again...

As of right now there appears to be more than 5 first class seats available on my flight for purchase, so I guess that's a positive sign. Will come down to how many people are trying to do the same thing as me...given i'm only a bronze FF these days, that's not going to help.

...
You may know earlier than 5 hours before the flight. My recent experience is that upgrades are processed between 12 and 30 hours before the flight.

Keep checking on Qantas.com from the morning of the day before the flight.

Also use www.checkmytrip.com and look for waitlisted / confirmed upgraded segments.

... and last Sept/Oct I had two upgrades that came through five days before the flights. :D

Thanks for the heads-up. The flight is tomorrow at 10am, so your post got me all excited! But my booking on the Qantas website is still showing as "Note: An upgrade to First is requested. Status of upgrade will be shown 5 hours before departure".

I'll keep an eye on it....

As serfty suggests, Go to www.checkmytrip.com and enter your QFF booking (actually, it's amadeus booking) number and surname and it may give you a clue well before QF's system does. That's usually the last place that knows!

I found out ~ 14hrs pre-flight last year (QFF didnt list until the next morning ~ 8hrs later).

Implies Business class is sold out. Given the number of J seats and how many requests for upgrades may be in, your chances are not the best.

When upgrade processing commences, Checkmytrip will show a waitlisted First Class segment.

Thanks, yes, checkmytrip.com is showing me as waitlisted for first class. I'm not at all confident of the upgrade, but hey, if the worst I can do is business class on an A380, you won't hear any complaints from me!

Hmm, it appears that checkmyflight is telling me that the status of first is now "confirmed" instead of "waitlisted"...sounds promising, but i won't believe it until I see it on qantas.com.au!

..which means you're flying in First. Do enjoy! :D

Well b*gger me, you're right! Which kinda blows my chance to do what I had promised via this thread...i.e. compare business class on the A380 vs the 747. But for a very good reason!

Thanks to everyone for your tips, this forum has proved to be very useful. You guys rock...

Get a few photos of 1st to post in here. BTW enjoy!:p

As QF93 is scheduled to depart at 10.10am today he would already be in the F Cabin sipping on some lovely champers, but I hope he allowed plenty of time to enjoy the offerings in the MEL FLounge. The highest status I have reached is Gold (now back to Silver) but I occasionally fly F and so enjoy the benefits of all that goes with it. As a mate once told me that when you fly First Class you have to go on all the rides and enjoy the experience.

Well, it was everything I hoped it to be, a top-notch experience all-round! I might yet get to take the A380 in J, as i'm messing around with my return flight at the moment..will post more details later.

Necro thread revival! I'm doing this trip again on Friday, and have done the same F upgrade request on my D class fare. I dug up this old thread as I couldn't recall the website you can use to check upgrade status ahead of Qantas showing it. But now I'm on there, there seems to be no indication of upgrade status...I recall last time it said "waitlisted", this time there doesn't seem to be a field on the form to show upgrade status...it just says "Cabin Class: Business". Has it changed or am I missing something?
