After breaking my ankle in HoiAn Vietnam my travel insurance arranged a nurse to come and bring me back in Singapore Airlines business seats last week and to say we were both utterly dissapointed is an understatement.

The cabin staff were gorgeous as always but there must be some HUGE budget cuts...firstly the menu was meagre with nothing fabulous on it and very few choices. No cheese and biscuits if you just wanted a snack..no deserts.
There was no amenities kit and believe this or not~no toothbrush/toothpaste.
The beds were absolutely horrible..so uncomfortable. The staff make the bed up for you and you have to lay on quite an angle with very little leg room.

This was by far the worst business class flight I have ever taken and I would never fly them again and the nurse who flies business all over the world bringing home patients said exactly the same. She was very unhappy.
How do Singapore Airlines have such a great reputation? I'm blowed if i know.

I'm betting you were on the circa midnight flights (supper service) from Singapore to Australia. These are single meal service - supper or breakfast flights. Designed to maximise sleep. Been like this for are long as I can remember.

Yes you are right...
But I've been on many late flights on other airlines and been offered full service dinner..not that I really wanted a full dinner...but...
Hot nuts..lovely deserts..cheese plates~~ this was just pathetic.
This business flight did nothing to lift my already miserable state.

I can understand why you would be disappointed if you were expecting more.

However, I can also understand why Singapore Airlines does this "sleeper service" on these relatively short redeye flights between Singapore and Australia. If there was a full dinner service, and then a full breakfast service, that only leaves 2-3 hours to sleep between meals. I would prefer to eat in the lounge and maximise my sleep on board.

With all my karma and zen angles, what you experienced is not a reflection on Singapore. It should be understood that essentially all airlines offer a cough product. On every flight. IMHO there is only a single flight type that always meets expectations - first with Emirates. Every single other flight is just a battle to endure.....

Basically you're paying for the space, all the rest (whatever that is) is just gravy.

Yep, you've struck the antithesis of the 'old' SQ experience, which I miss also. The meals and amenity kits were symptomatic of the timing of the flight, but I think the angled, narrow footwells are dreadful.

I asked after my last SQ long haul how they got the seats so wrong and I felt the J food was subpar for their reputation.

The staff are always at a high level but the side angle seats have to go. Surprisingly, I was impressed with Etihad dine on demand.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

SQ and AY ... have flown them both in the last six months....lucky I am 157cm so length no problem....however the best hack was buying the mattress.... makes it so much more comfortable....thank you @RooFlyer for that suggestion. No problem with the QF seats I like them even the older ones.

Well...i dont know about that....because there was no sign of a toothbrush/toothpaste....disgusting imo

Toothbrush packs ect are in the toilets, check out the hidey hole drawers in there as theres also combs, razors, tampons ect...... Unless you were on a flight with my husband and he tends to takes all the toothbrushes. I try to stop him but hes a squirrel for those things and the FAs do refill the drawers.

I thought you were paying for the ability to swan up to the J/F check in desk without a care in the world, whilst the 50 pax penned into the Y corral looked on covetously...

Meals, yes. If wanting to a specific type of meal, always advisable to book the cook on such flights. However, SQ has not handed out amenity kits (other than during special promotional periods) for at least 15 years, and probably longer.
