Made any travel mistakes lately?

Have you tried hailing a cab in Las Vegas? That is a no go too.
Turning the wheel to the curb is pretty necessary in places like San Francisco with those amazing hills.
Getting out of the hire car when you have been pulled over by sirens and flashing lights for some driving offense could be the last mistake you will make! Window down and hands on the top of the steering wheel can keep your life expectancy intact

Were you parking on a slope/hill?
Yes, but not signposted that i could see. I just googled the violation number. What a ridiculous rule.
Not a ridiculous rule. Just sound practise to stop gravity moving the car into a dangerous situation. Something I have always done, even on level ground.

I dunno - the wheels are all straight in this pic:

Not quite.
The front wheels of the far right car on the right cannot be seen
The black car on the left has front wheels turned the correct way
The sliver mini has the front wheels turned a little, but the incorrect way. (Could roll down that hill)
Parking at right angle is different to parallel parking

WTF? Are you forgetting that Platinum can have a guaranteed seat on any flight, as a published benefit? (Provided they want to pay full Y prices)

Subject to operations constraints, and also that you are supposed to book said Y ticket by midday the day before travel.

Flying HA HNL/BNE last month we arrived at the airport at the HA terminal as SO was dropping myself & parents there before returning the Dollar rental car & meeting up again.

Recognising all the self service kiosks I realised that this was the inter-island terminal where we'd checked in for our Maui flight the week before (after arriving off our QF flight at the intl terminal) I told SO to keep driving as we had to go to the intl terminal.

Then I noticed the sign said "all other airlines" & realised my error. After missing the turn off back to the HA terminal we found ourselves back on the Nimitz Fwy so had to backtrack again.

Toll Holdings are responsible for ground arrangements, including boarding for CX flights in Perth

Did you actually have any interaction with Toll in PER or did you OLCI with carry on only?

I can't see how a CSA would have been able to add a bag to a pax who wasn't booked on the current flight they were checking in.

Obviously the Customs Officer wasn't on the ball either.

Sorry? A guaranteed Y seat always has the implicit possible consequence of some-one getting bumped. Doesn't matter if you book a week before or an hour before - if the plane is already full, some-one will be bumped.
Do yoU actually understand the Platinum seat guarantee?

It is what oz_mark posted not some Platinum missing a flight they have had booked for months and then getting a guaranteed seat on another flight and someone else misses out because they were late.

It appears that you are saying Qantas is promoting unethical / not-decent practices by giving the guarantee. If so, consider if you wish to belong to a scheme where these practices exist.
That is not the right answer either.

I wish people would stop telling everyone what is in the terms and conditions.

I know what is in the terms and conditions but it does not make the terms and conditions right.

And I would never take a seat on a flight knowing full well that someone else is going to miss out. That is totally selfish and not in my character as a human being....

Not so much a mistake but on a flight between KUL- PVG last week an Indian guy next to me was dialling a number as we sat on the runway about to take-off......I grabbed his phone and said if he didn't turn it off I'd take the battery out and give it back to him when we landed in PVG.....he obliged and it ended up being a fairly frosty 5 1/2 hr flight :)

Today I did OLCI for a flight Tuesday morning as I wanted to make sure my seat choices were locked in, several hours later I wished I hadn't as now the earlier flight is more appealing but can't fly ahead any more once checked-in (VA)

This was for holidays. [For work trips I never check-in till I am in the taxi on the way to the airport.]

Lesson Learnt: never check-in early. lol

No - the implicit and ethical assumption is that if somebody pays good money for a ticket and turns up at the airport on time he will be given a seat on the aircraft. Legal niceties and fine print do not detract from this.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. I'm also saying that platinum wankers who happily accept that their careless mistake will result in some poor bugger having his day (maybe his whole trip) ruined are unethical.

Perhaps so. I for one would never accept that situation if I were ever to rise to the exalted heights of platinum wankerdom. On the other hand, I find that participating in this forum often leaves me with a feeling of frustration and extreme sadness at the selfish and arrogant attitude of a few members here. I don't think we have a lot in common - I'm outa here.
Essentially what you re saying is that seats should never be oversold in case one individual on an occasion get bumped.

That being the case there would be many flights that bog with empty seats. Empty seats are a perishable commodity which cost the airline money which in turn results in higher seat prices which then costs the passenger money. Whilst I understand and sympathise with what you are saying I suggest you have little, or no, knowledge of airline management and also suggest what you are saying is simply impractical in the real world.

I forgot to mention the accommodation side of things in HNL.

We'd booked an apartment at The Ikikai in HNL through VRBO after our 7 nights in Maui so were meeting up with the folks who got in a couple of nights before us. When I'd booked their apartment (also through VRBO) I didn't realise I'd booked Mum & Dad into the Ilikai Marina which is a separate property still in Kalakaua Ave but across Hobron Lane. I didn't realise there was more than one property with the word 'Ilikai' in it.

The folks had arrived in HNL late at night & gone to the Ilikai only to find they were at the Ilikai Marina however they said that the hotel bell boy was extremely helpful & took them to the Ilikai Marina even taking their bags up to the room for them.

We arrived 2 days later & after picking up the rental car picked Mum & Dad up from the USS Arizona Memorial as arranged then went back to the Ilikai Marina thinking that's where we must be staying as well however the room numbers didn't have the apartment number we were meant to be staying in. As it turns out we were at the Ilikai so did the reverse of what Mum & Dad had done.

I will double check the addresses of accommodation very carefully in the future!

I don't get why VA can't un-check you in & why doing OLCI is somehow a point of no return.

They can. Dragon in the lounge on that day perhaps?

Oh, I didn't know about unchecking-in! Is this the same for all airlines? I did an OLCI for an EK flight from AKL to MEL 24 hours before the flight and had to forfeit my fare after missing it due to a last minute cancellation of my earlier 3K flight from SIN to AKL...

Heading off to Europe tomorrow for a 4 week vacation all completely arranged by myself... rental cars, flights with some connections on separate tickets, hotels, restaurants... feeling a little apprehensive that I have made a boo boo somewhere...

That apprehensive feeling will make the journey that more exciting!

Bon voyage! Are you travelling by yourself though? Wonder if it's better to have made a "trip up" with/without a companion...

Thanks for the wishes....

Travelling with the SO who has had little to no input to the entire itinerary... is just happy to be going away to shop... and shop... and shop... and wine and dine... Catch a few rays on the Costa de la Luz in Spain and splurge on some three star restaurants in Basque Country... Me too I have to add! :)

Are you saying that if you hadn't done OLCI with EK that your airfare would have been refundable or was it a non-refundable airfare?

I was trying out Markis10's instruction on how to book a JASA award booking..just followed the instructions without thinking and ended up with an actual booking to Perth. Oops realised how far I had gone only after I saw the confirmation no. on my screen..obviously had to cancel that and so that was a 5000 ff mile lesson!!

I think I would have been able to get a credit or at least change the date...

Domestic JASAs are fully refundable, I would be chasing that 5k.
