Greetings All

First post. Excellent site that gets used regularly by myself for invaluable tips and travel information that has saved me dollars and gained me status. On several occasions I have found myself being able to provide facts/answers to a question (without responding), disagreeing to an answer provided (without responding) and verify an answer being provided (without responding).

I guess my first question is directed towards 'lurkers' as I certainly have been for some months now - 'Why do you not post?'. As this question may not induce a response, to all the regular posters - 'Was your first post a question or an answer?'.

I am a firm believer nothing in life is for free and hoping over time that I can give back some of what I have taken from this excellent site.

Cheers
Matt

mr_matt_t,

Welcome to AFF. :D

As the former lurker I believe that you are the best person to answer your own question. From my perspective I've no idea about my first post (or last week for that matter)

With your +ve attitude and offer to give back what you are able I'm sure that you'll be an asset to the site. We look forward to hearing more from you. ;)

Hi mr_matt_t,

I will add my welcome as well. As is the case with straitman, I really don't remember what my first post was about - but over time I have asked questions, answered questions, and got involved in exchanges of opinions.

I hope that you enjoy it here, and look forward to your contributions.

Cheers

Thanks for the welcome

My attempt to coax others seems to have failed and the usual suspects have replied (3 posters with approx 8000 posts between them)

Thanks again and look forward to contributing.

Okay, just to ensure it is not only the "usual suspects" who respond, I (with a very lowly number of posts, but enough to now be known as a "Posting Freak" :p ) will also add my welcome. As the others have agreed, you are right, this is a great site and provides great benefits to all users (and lurkers).

If my (fading) memory serves me correctly, my first post was a question which was answered promptly and very well. Since then I have asked further questions, provided the limited answers I can to others' questions, and just enjoyed the general exchanges.

Hope you continue to enjoy the site, and the sharing of information to benefit us all.

Welcome mr_matt_t,

I lurked this site for quite some time too before finally registering and starting to contribute. I have learned a lot from aksing specific questions or just reading other people's responses to posts.

Look forward to your contributions as well.

I joined this site in desperate need of finding answer to my question and shamelessly doing it so, i.e posted my first post the minute I am a member. Now that my problem had been passed, I still stay because I find the site has been loaded with useful information.

I "lurk" more these days, but try my best to answer questions that I think I know the answer, although more often than not, the more experience members has answer the questions way ahead of me (this is meant as a complementary comment, to me, it show how many people do care to help others).

As a relatively new member and something of a lurker... I admit that I registered to ask a question and that I continue to look in (or lurk). I guess the reason for not responding to the posts I actually know something about (which is not a huge proportion of threads), is that by the time I see the posts, it may be days since the original question was posed - by which time other members have already responded (often with much the same thing I would have said). Rather than add to the clutter by posting a "me too" type of response, I refrain.

Regardless, I still find useful information here and will continue to look in (sounds so much better than lurking - doesn't it?) and post if I think I can add value to the conversation.

My response was well summed up by Dot. I enjoy reading and learning and will contribute where / if I can, but I don't see a lot of point in having 6 or 7 people respond all with the same answer (except in this case of course;) )

.

Well done Matt. You've managed to clutter up a previously useful discussion board with your inane drivel about being a watcher not a doer. There's a word for that but it's not called lurking. And did you really expect your fellow voyeurs to come out of the cupboard when they know that the "usual suspects" will belittle them for any statement or opinion not backed up by the T&C's of every obscure airline, FF scheme, travel agent, etc? It looks like nothing has really sunk in to your ....

... hang on ....

Sorry - wrong discussion board. Let me start again.

MY first post was back in October 2005 (the month I joined), and was a whinge about the BA dragons in LHR enforcing the 1-guest rule. From memory I was shouted down by the usual suspects for being unreasonable, and was pointed to the T&C's of the QC as if they were the 10 commandments.

There is, however, a wealth of knowledge on this forum that you should feel free to contribute to regardless of your lack of expertise. I know I do.

Cheers,

Andrew

I was reading your post Andrew (or acampbel to be formal :) ) and nodding my head in agreement when I realised I had recently (earlier today) quoted T&C's in response to someone's question re lounge access at Dubai, so it got me thinking 'am I turning into someone I don't like'. I reread my post and decided I'm not. It's reasonably matter-of-fact but not IMO rude, just answering a specific hypothetical question. I can recall posts I've made disparaging the citing of T&Cs as the be-all and end-all, but there are, I believe, many times when the question warrants them as part of the answer (no reference here to your post(s) BTW, just a general statement).

Now if you want rude, arrogant and tiresome posts  check out the AA board over on FlyerTalk! (you may have been referring to that anyway). A lot of good info, but there are one or two posters in particular over there (with literally thousands of posts) who I reckon would have about 95% of their posts criticising the poster (often a new poster), primarily for 'not doing a search first', but also for many other things.

I'm not sure what perverse pleasure these people get out of doing that. I saw them referred to over there (in a disparaging manner) as 'keyboard hard-men'. An appropriate description.

I think by and large on this board we are a pretty genteel bunch. Every individual has their own view of the world and their own way of expressing it and I think the mix here is generally pretty good, and the mood friendly. There are a few cases where posters clearly don't like each other (or do a damn job of giving that impression), and a certain amount of pot-stirring, but overall it's pretty good.

BTW, my first post was in March 2005, and was a question regarding "Express Lane" when departing AKL international - and I was welcomed to AFF and the question promptly answered. :)

So welcome to mr_matt_t (and others). Keep those posts coming.

Cheers.

Why do I not post; the layout of this website needs improvement, too many forums. I don't travel so often so although I find some of the answers useful I really don't get enough use of out them.

The questions get answered really quickly so by the time I get around to trying to navigate all the forums the answer is already posted.

My first post was an answer to one of those survey type questions, and for land rights, you know registering a great username.

Welcome to AFF Matt, all the members with high post counts are friendly knowledgeable people even the moderators.

B/B, have you tried using the excellent New Posts link near the top of every page.

It lists those posts that have been made since your last visit as well as any other recent post you have not seen.

I have this link bookmarked!

amen to acampbel!

you are one funny man, and the smiley munching toilet (I have never understood grown men entertaining themselves with what should be the preserve of school girls)sublime. having said that, there are a very few, who in a very real sense are this site, without these people this site would be nothing. long live the freaks.

Thanks for the tip.

I also think along the same lines as Dot.

I have browsed this site for quite some time but often find that I don't have anywhere near as much knowledge as the regular flyers. If I can answer a question, I am usually too slow and someone has already answered the question (and I don't want to double up with similar answers).

I do wish to thank the regular posters who impart so much information/experiences to this forum as it always interesting reading and has helped me in the past.

I hope that I can contribute something useful to other members in the future.

I lurked for about 6 months, with my first post being last week. I joined and posted because someone needed a more current QP invite and I had a few stashed.

The advice on here has been entertaining and valuable- but i'll generally keep my trap shut because others have far more to add than I!

I lurked for probably six weeks before I finally bit the bullet and wanted to ask a question and answer a thread that was posted. I thought I might look stupid answering questions as a "Newbie" but we all have to start somewhere. AFF is a wealth of information and I have my first trip in J after flying endless whY, all courtesy of AFF on Sunday. Lap up all the information and feel free to contribute when you can - I do. :)
