Lower Frequent Flyer charges, review of International fare structure

Disappointing that QF have only seen fit to reduce the charges for Y & Y+.

And I'm guessing there won't be a refund for pax who have already booked and paid the taxes & fuel surcharges for award flights to be flown over the next 11 months......................

I would have my house on that !!

Anybody noticed changes $$ in QF/JQ award flights to/from AU/NZ ?

Or do they not count, being that 'the ditch' is such a competitive market ......

I do not have any issue with the overall cost of a paid fare staying the same as the fuel surcharges are absorbed into the base fare. That is the right thing to do in my opinion. Overall paid fares will ultimately be determined by competition.

My issue is with retaining fuel surcharges on FF redemptions. If the amount of points required for the redemption does not cover the full cost of the base fare, then adjust the number of points required for the redemption - but be prepared to cop the complaints from the masses on that one too!

A Question for Red Roo,

How does this removal of YQ from the surcharges affect products like OneWorld Explorer type fares sold by QF? The base fare price is set and published by OneWorld for each eligible country of purchase/origin, so does this mean such fares are suddenly a lot more affordable to be purchased from QF? or will the price of such products ex-Australia be increased accordingly? Or will those fares still retain the old YQ surcharges?

I'm trying hard, very hard to like Qantas again. But I can't I just can't.

Good news? The surcharge reductions have flowed through. The fuel surcharge has dropped, as promised, for example on MEL-SIN return, by $40. It's a start. The fuel surcharge on an award booking MEL-SIN-MEL has dropped to $330 as promised.

Bad news? If you're travelling in the other direction. Flying in the other direction (SIN-MEL-SIN), as far as I can tell the fuel surcharge has dropped just $15 AUD on a return basis. The fuel surcharge on award booking is still about $415 AUD return - some $85 more than exactly the same flights taken in the other direction. Not that I'd ever use points, with current fares, it values 60000 points at about $110 AUD (ie fare of $120 SGD + $580 SGD in taxes and fuel surcharges).

Naturally QF's fuel contracts are set up so that they pay more for fuel if they have any passengers on board with tickets issued outside Australia.

Please excuse my cynicism.

Hmmm .. wonder if there will be a Rockford Lunch with Lesley Grant so she can explain the No Cheaper Airfares With Cheaper Fuel (TM), Not All of Our Award Tickets will Have Fuel Surcharge Reduced Let Alone Abolished (TM) and the LOOK! We Have a Sale On Don't Worry About the Continuing YQ (TM) changes, like the Simpler & Fairer (TM) one?

Thinking caps on for those questions, everyone!

Not sure RedRoo knows what a OneWorld explorer fare is!;) RedRoo can't even clarify Qantas lounge access rules for QF WP vs P1...

I've switched my credit cards over to Velocity. It's often difficult to find award availability through Qantas FF to America and Europe in the premium cabins. Not to mention the high taxes if you can find a flight. I cancelled my award booking to London with QF FF and rebooked First on Etihad via Velocity. Saved $600 in taxes. Yay for me :)

You're right, just like they don't make anyone who has a ticket pay any more when fares, fuel surcharges,airport/Govt imposed charges and big negative exchange rate changes happen
Life's like that, Just like petrol will always be cheaper at the first station you drive past after filling up...I call it the 'Costanza theory' .

Plus EY F (yes even the A340/777, let alone the A380 F) beats the QF A380 F any day.

Fair call, seems like every day another airline announces rolling fuel into the base fare. I've never understood the fuel discussion, ultimately its what you have to pull out of yr wallet that determines the total cost and market forces set that.
The beneficiaries here are actually companies that have deals with QF. Corp deal discounts come off the base fare so their flight costs will drop with a higher base fare attacking their Corp disc. So corp Australia on QF Int will be better off pricewise.
Cant wait for the banks to pass that saving on as well!
Re Fuel and FF redemptions again, spot on, only problem that's not likely in the short term, although we will point the finger at you for putting that idea in their head in future I'm sure. Reality QFI is still a marginal business
with lower fuel ,they are unlikely to reduce that $$ stream unless its replaced somehow. It would be interesting to use the QF points plus pay slider to give you a idea what the additional points impact would be to current levels..let some trails begin

Wasn't this the same airline which 6 months ago was desperately looking for $3 billion in loan funding from the Australian government?

No. They didn't ask for a cent, they wanted a debt guarantee to give them access to lower interest on their loans after they lost their investment grade credit rating.
