Apologies in advance if I should be posting this elsewhere but a similar thread to this from 2005 is locked and I cannot reply to that thread. I have a mixed class ticket from MEL - LAX on Cathay. As Cathay no longer fly F from Australia, my first flight CX134 from MEL to HKG is in J. I am then connecting to CX880 from HKG to LAX in F. I am wondering what lounge access I will have at my point of origin in Melbourne? Does the terminology in the oneworld lounge access rules, "connecting between oneworld marketed and operated flights" and "First and Business Class customers connecting on the same day of travel, or before 6am the following day, can access the lounge when travelling between an international long haul and an international short haul or domestic flight (and vice-versa)" preclude access to the First lounge in MEL? Please note that I am now only a Silver QFF member so will not have lounge access based on status. There seem to be different interpretations of this wording and I can't find a definitive answer..

Connecting long haul J to long haul F will only get you J class lounge access at the point of origin.

However - that being said - Cathay will issue you with lounge invitations at check-in in Melbourne (these will be both both Melbourne and Hong Kong). Sometimes it's been known for the computer to issue an F lounge invite for Melbourne. If that's the case, use it and be happy :) If it issues business class, don't worry too much, you'll get the F lounge in Hong Kong (not point pushing the issue with the check in staff as you're only entitled to J class lounges in MEL).

There shouldn't be any conflicting interpretation of the OneWorld rules. They are clear. You must be connecting long haul to short haul or v.v. Individual Oneworld airlines have their own (sometimes more generous) lounge access rules, but those don't normally apply at the point of origin.

Great thanks MEL_Traveller! Much appreciated.

Along these lines but if my first flight is in J (SIN-HKG) and next flight is W (HKG-PER) am I able to access a J Lounge in HK? A secondary consideration, I'm travelling with two people that are in J. Would I just be asking for the good graces of the lounge angels or will the original J flight be enough?

Your first flight shouldn't provide lounge accesd for second flight.

One of the 2 travelling with you in business should be able to guest you into the lounge.

You may get lucky.

During check-in at SIN CX system will issue any lounge passes it thinks you are entitled to. Sometimes the computer is very generous and might give one for HKG as well. (Connecting from short-haul premium to long haul non-premium is well outside the lounge access rules, but the system has been known to pick up on the short haul sometimes, like a TPE-HKG or NRT-HKG in F and issue lounge passes for all remaining flights.)

If that fails, unless your business class passenger companions have status (OWS or above), they won't be able to guest you into the lounge in HKG either. (Business class alone doesn't have any guesting rights.)

Thanks. I realised that J Pax have no guesting rights.

An expensive work around will be to earn 9,000 Air Asia Miles, Join the MP club and purchase a single use pass.

Yes. But is it worth it? There are other pay per use lounges in HKG that would separate you from your friends, but be easier to organise.

You can try appealing to the lounge agents, but pretty much certain you will be rejected.

Not sure about worth. Depends on how long we'll be there. We land at 1045 and fly out at 2225.

Yes we'll head into the city (the World's Fanciest Maccas won't visit itself according to Miss 11sjw
), however I'm not sure how late we'll stay land side.

I hope so. CX website says J Pax only have access for themselves. I'm hoping they won't want to split a family apart. We'll see how that goes.

City is the way to go. You will exit straight off the arriving plane to the city (you can't enter the departures area and then head into the city, getting back through to immigration can be a very long and difficult exercise). Anything over a few hours of paid lounge access can be quite expensive.

Perhaps a cheap city hotel - would allow you all to check in around midday. AUD100 for a reasonably good hotel in Wan Chai would give you all a place to relax and shower etc.

Family or no family, won't make much of a difference to the CX lounge staff unfortunately.

Thanks for the replies. Will have to look into a hotel for the afternoon / evening.

The Regal Airport can sometimes have discounts or promotions, but can also he horrendously expensive. Plenty of options in Wan Chai or Sheung Whan (JJ hotel, or Island Pacific, or similar). The island is good for sightseeing if that's your thing.

Apologies. I assumed Oneworld lounge access rules allowed a business class passenger 1 guest.

I've had mixed success with Cathay and I think you'll have a good chance with 2 business class passengers guesting a family member.

Interesting with Cathay if you receive an upgrade to business you are not entitled to lounge access. And people rave on about this airline over Qantas?

Was travelling economy from MEL-HKG and then business from HKG to TPE. Business lounge passes issued for both, wasn't expecting it for the MEL-HKG leg but it was nice to have. :)

Lounge access though was limited to the travellers flying business only (no guesting). Tried in HK.

Correct. Operational (totally free) upgrades are not invited to use the lounge. It does catch a few people out, but I think everyone is just happy to get the upgrade.

The system works in weird ways. Sometimes it issues passes when not expected. But it's not consistent. Economy MEL-HKG followed by First HKG-SFO = no lounge invite in MEL (even to the CX lounge).

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. I have a QF award flight coming up with the first leg BNE - SIN with QF in economy. I then fly QR J SIN-DOH-EDI. According to Lounge Buddy I have lounge access in BNE with both EK and QF. Is anyone able to confirm if this is correct. My understanding would indicate otherwise as there is no domestic leg and BNE-SIN is more than 5 hours so not international short haul..

Thanking you.
