Lots of new QF flights to the USA/South America,

Don't forget the annual reports is next Thursday (28th).. So sometimes good news proceeds bad news.. Also smart move to get rid of 108 flight number.. It was always the 10-late.

Certainly tight!
You can often taxi for 55min at JFK.

Mind you does have over 2hrs on the ground at LAX on the way back,
although presumably much of that will be needed for bags to move to QF18/94

I am sure the flight time is generously padded on both the inbound and outbound services to take into account lengthy taxi times in JFK.

Come to think of it, the VX service that I took earlier from JFK to LAX this year had a block time of 6 hours and 20 mins but the actual flying time was about 5 1/2 hours.

Surely they could have had one daytime departure ex LAX (maybe not everyday)........the later departures to LAX are good but still leaving at night all the time is painful, particularly for hotel check outs
But yes timings changes won't be enough - HKG or SIN to go JQ or something similar will be announced

Is a 55 minute turnaround at JFK feasible?

So the JFK flight now officially departs from Brisbane. Moving up in the world up north haha.

I wondered the same thing about JFK, but took a closer look at the schedule and saw that LAX-JFK has had an extra 45 min built into the LAX-JFK schedule (current dep 0855 arr 1705, planned dep 0855 arr 1750) with the JFK-LAX schedule leaving JFK 10 min later and arriving at LAX the same time.

Of particular note is the short connection and turnaround times of all flights in the MEL-JFK service and the potential for delays to cascade. These times are as below:

QF93 to QF17: 105 min to connect from an A380 to a B747 through US customs/immigration
QF17 to QF18: 55 min to turnaround a B747 at the gate
QF18 to QF94: 70 min, airside connection
QF94 to QF93 125 min to turnaround an A380 at MEL

This is a consequence of the retiming of the MEL-LHR service, which has forced QF94 and QF10 to turn into QF93 and QF9 at MEL respectively. It should be interesting to see how operationally stable the new timetable is.

No mention of QF107 SYD-LAX

Given QF11 has taken its spot, does this mean only one SYD-LAX flight daily???

Love the QF 95 timing but not super happy about it being a 747. First world problem maybe?

Wouldn't exactly say "lots of new QF flights", maybe lots of changes to existing flights & four extra flights a week.

Positive news.

I like the idea of an evening SYD-LAX flight (QF17). It won't suit those connecting to the east coast, but will suit those checking into LA hotels and those with a shorter-hop connection from LAX to the west coast or thereabouts. The ex-SYD time suits getting away after work!

The new SYD-LAX flights seem to tie up well with JNB, so some good aircraft utilization.
- QF64 arrives from JNB at 1405, QF17 departs to LAX at 1730.

So this would mean
- 3 aircraft SYD-LAX/JNB
- 2 aircraft BNE-LAX-JFK
- 1 aircraft MEL-LAX
- 1 aircraft SYD-SCL
- 1 aircraft SYD-HKG
......leaving only 1 aircraft as an operational spare or seasonal capacity increases.

Unless JNB gets reduced to something like 4xwk, then I'd say goodbye to the 744 to NRT.

What would do Qantas well in Asia imo is a more premium heavy 333 configuration (36J/231Y), but I digress.

I'm guessing it's the 747s you're counting above!

The QF17/QF18/QF63/QF64 rotation timing works well. Great utilisation.

The aircraft sitting on the ground at NRT for over 12 hours, on the other hand, isn't such great utilisation.

Qf 107/108 now become lax return Qf 17/18

Qf 15/16 from BNE does the JFK run

I like the timing of QF95. It's always a preference of mine to arrive between lunchtime and late afternoon after a long haul flight. Thumbs up. Also affords a nice connection in MEL F for those of us that have to travel to MEL from other parts of eastern Australia ;)

Definitely better for immediate hotel checkin but still early enough to get to LAS, SEA, SFO etc. Has anyone else arrived in LAX early to mid-arvo to comment on what clearing customs is like at that hour?

You mean like the old SYD-centric QF108 that left around lunchtime and arrived in SYD in the evening? Although that's only good for pax terminating in SYD as it arrived too late to connect to anywhere else.

The workaround for hotel late checkout is to stay the last night at an airport hotel like the Sheraton Four Points which gives you a 24 hour stay from whenever you checkin ie 2100 Wed night to 2100 Thu night.

Good for pax ex PER too as it saves them either having to get the red eye prior to a long haul flight or the 0600 flight with only 90 minutes to connect so more Flounge time for WP's from the West Coast.
