Lots of new QF flights to the USA/South America,

Back when QF93/94 was operated by a 747, it was always an ER bird. I believe it's like QF7/8 was when it was a 747 flight - the route is so long that you're *almost* guaranteed a refurbished ER aircraft.

That was my thoughts. Will be a nice change to be back in a 747 after plenty of time in the A380 recently.

Geez - Brisbane's direct service to NYC didn't last long.

Guess it was too shameful that people had to change codes to get to Sydney to/from NYC.

I wondered the same thing about JFK, but took a closer look at the schedule and saw that LAX-JFK has had an extra 45 min built into the LAX-JFK schedule (current dep 0855 arr 1705, planned dep 0855 arr 1750) with the JFK-LAX schedule leaving JFK 10 min later and arriving at LAX the same time.

Of particular note is the short connection and turnaround times of all flights in the MEL-JFK service and the potential for delays to cascade. These times are as below:

QF93 to QF17: 105 min to connect from an A380 to a B747 through US customs/immigration
QF17 to QF18: 55 min to turnaround a B747 at the gate
QF18 to QF94: 70 min, airside connection
QF94 to QF93 125 min to turnaround an A380 at MEL

This is a consequence of the retiming of the MEL-LHR service, which has forced QF94 and QF10 to turn into QF93 and QF9 at MEL respectively. It should be interesting to see how operationally stable the new timetable is.

Qantas recently announced it would boost services to the Americas from early 2015.

Our new schedule of increased flying to Los Angeles has been published and sees some LAX-JFK flights re-numbered, effective for travel from 1 February 2015, as follows:

QF15 LAX-JFK will be re-numbered to QF11
QF16 JFK-LAX will be re-numbered to QF18

So if you book QF11 SYD/JFK the first sector will be a 388 and the second a 744? They must be using the 744 that operates the QF15 as the QF17 (formerly QF107) SYD/LAX and the new QF95 MEL/LAX are late pm departures?

Having a different a/c type operating the continuation of QF11 could potentially cause issues if booking F award travel as the first leg operated by a 388 will have a 4 class cabin then the second leg operated by a 744 will only have 3 classes.

If I'm reading the above correctly, on the return it will be possible to book QF18 JFK to SYD on the 744.

Yes - it causes seat selection grief too. I recall when we had 744/330 on the SYDJFK and you had to call to allocate seats!

So is the logic to avoid scheduling issues? I noticed QF15/16 have been retimed to depart 10 mins later in each direction too.

So the LAX flights are going to this?

QF11 SYD-LAX 1145-0630 388
QF11 LAX-JFK 0855-1705 744
QF15 BNE-LAX 1130-0630 744
QF17 SYD-LAX 1730-1205 744
QF93 MEL-LAX 1155-0710 388
QF95 MEL-LAX 1745-1300 744 357

QF12 LAX-SYD 2220-0820+2 388
QF16 LAX-BNE 2350-0755+2 744
QF18 JFK-LAX 1835-2140 744
QF18 LAX-SYD 2355-0935+2 744
QF94 LAX-MEL 2250-0940+2 388
QF96 LAX-MEL 1830-0500+2 744 135

Not too sure about the 2nd MEL flight with the arrive Sunday, return Monday thing.

I'd be interested to know why QF felt the need to change the flight numbers on the JFK legs. Seems quite pointless and only adds confusion IMHO.

Same reason they got rid of QF31/32 and replaced with QF1/2 when SYD-BKK-LHR got dumped.

Certainly tight!
You can often taxi for 55min at JFK.

Mostly that is outbound, so it's appropriate to include any time allowed for that in the flight time.

55 minutes at the gate is doable.

A non ER can do LAX-MEL, especially if there's a 380 available to take any cargo...

Offer a "direct" QF flight SYD-NYC just as it was with 107/108 which seem to have gone away totally. It's not really a surprise.

Have been taking a look at the loads on the new QF95/96 services for the past couple of weeks and, for the most part, they aren't what I'd call healthy. Outbound they've been particularly weak, with the inbound 96 a little stronger.

Not sure if this can be put down to low season (wouldn't have thought so), poor promotion of the new services or an overestimation of demand for services at this time?

I certainly hope for QF's sake that they can keep this as a viable service!

Only a single data point, in one class, but I'm looking to change a flight on QF96 in J from next week to 10 days hence. Only 2 seats left on that particular service. The timing on this is great for both departure LAX and connections though Melbourne - hope it survives.

I received an email from QF offering MEL-SYD-YVR return Y flights for $1900.

NZ recently had MEl-AKL-YVR flights return Y flights for $900.

Given there's a connection with either carrier and AKL is 100 times easier to transit than SYD its hard to see the benefit in taking QF!

Was $900 available during the school holidays as this flight is?

Very good point. These summer (Northern) flights are slap bang in the middle of peak travel season (which is why QF is running them :) ) - I imagine most fares for these date ranges to North America will be on the steep side because of this.

I note NZ currently has a $995 special SYD-LAX, but it's travel dates are: Outbound 20 Apr - 11 Jun 2015 and return 20 Apr - 6 Jul 2015 (and who knows how much availability there actually is during June)

Indeed, it's easy to say 'oh Air new zealand has a sale fare of $900 so what's the point' but when you go and LOOK at the air new zealand website and actually CHECK, then you will not find anything under $2000 return for June/July in this travel period.

e,.g. 30 june outbound - 07 july inbound mel-akl-yvr-akl-mel is $2229 AUD on airnz.com.au, so whats the point in flying air new zealand???
