Looks like the 80k joining bonus has been reinstated.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong - but I just checked the T&C for the current offer and it specifically states that the 80,000 bonus points are only available to NEW American Express card holders. Doesn't even stipulate new Plat. Cards - just refers to New American Express Card Holders.

Based on that I would think if you have any other AMEX card then you're not going to get the bonus points.

Maybe I'm wrong but thats how I read it?

I'm very familiar with redeeming Qantas points but can anyone advise what 80k points will do with another AMEX partner carrier in Business (either one way or return)? I did see above the mention of one-way SQ Suite Saver MEL-SIN-HKG.

Return J SYD-HKG on CX for 80000 asia miles!
Great value.
Same for Virgin Atlantic SYD-HKG return in J.

So could you sign up, take the free VA flight, sweep the MR points and then cancel after 3 months and get a pro rata refund???

Let us know if this shouldn't be asked and i will remove...

Of course to redeem the award flight with QF anyway your looking at several hundred more $s in fuel surcharges etc, not sure about Virgin... Can you sweep there MRs to any program which doesn't have large fuel surcharges like one of the US ones???

They won't give you a pro rata refund if you've taken the points and the flight, I'm guessing.

The refunds last year were due to a significant change in the T and Cs. That said, if the points and flight are worth it to you at $900, then you might as well try, you can only win. And you get PP and SPG gold for a year to boot!

Do you still get the Marco Polo Gold? That would be the tipping point for me.

Ha apparently I stopped reading partway through:

"If you apply and are approved you will also be eligible to apply for a Platinum Reserve Credit Card (with the $395 annual Card fee waived) that comes with an annual complimentary economy return flight[SUP]16[/SUP]to 7 international destinations and 29 domestic destinations or an overnight hotel stay[SUP]17"

[/SUP] Hmm, tempting, very tempting.

Edit: less tempting. I don't meet the income requirement. Bummer.

INTERNATIONAL..... Complimentary ?
is that correct. .

Bali from perth and NZ from the east. Limited international...
And somewhat limited availability too. Wellington is on their list but with the Air NZ codeshare there are not many actual VA flights.

Phoned Amex today to check on this. Was told that it is for 'brand new' applicants and that anyone who has any existing Amex card is not eligible for the bonus points.
I'm not sure that this is correct as I have held an Amex card of some description since '87 and when swapping and changing cards I have always received the advertised sign on bonuses. I might ring again in a couple of days and check with another operator.

Has anyone else contacted them to check eligibility for the sign on bonus?

I got the 75k sign on bonus last year when i already have the platinum edge card....

Not sure the Macro Polo gold is still on offer - the application says they need to receive it by 15th Feb...

Hi all, considering I don't fly enough to justify the conversion of 80,000 to Qantas points etc, can I convert to Gift Cards via the Amex rewards website? By my calculations, 80,000 is roughly worth $600 in Coles/Myer vouchers.

I appreciate all your valuable info and input on these forums!

Of course. All AmEx cards give you AmEx points (except those co-branded with Qantas or Virgin Australia). You then decided if you want to transfer them to Virgin Atlantic or Virgin Australia or Cathay Pacific or wherever.

I'd be happy to discover you as along lost brother and pay you $600 cash if you were really going to cash out for vouchers...

Cashing out isn't a great use I agree but better than vouchers is FX transactions which are 12000 per $100. Just ask for AUD at any of the AMEX FX shops (there's some in Sydney at least). 60K Asia miles is return Economy to LA so those points can be worth a lot more
