"Leading Hotels Celebrates its 80th with USD 19.28 Room Rates

The Leading Hotels of the World is celebrating its 80th anniversary by releasing a limited number of their most-coveted hotel rooms at the unprecedented rate of USD 19.28 per night.

But wait for it there is one small catch... in keeping with the 80th celebration theme this special offer will only be available for 80 minutes at 12 noon GMT (8.a.m. Eastern Time) on October 1, 2008, so it will most definitely be a case of ‘first in best dressed’.

Just months after launching an epic USD 1 million trip “Around the World” in honour of its 80th birthday the Leading Hotels will be turning the tables to embrace its founding year (1928) with the celebratory USD 19.28 rate.

The anniversary promotion enables registered customers to reserve a maximum of two nights at USD 19.28 per night (exclusive of taxes, VAT or other supplemental charges) at a single participating hotel for travel between November 1 and December 15, 2008.

For more information and for a complete listing of participating hotels go to

Site wasn't working earlier today, so I've quoted it above.

The promotion has been open for 30 minutes, and the site has been down the whole time:

I'll keep trying!

Oh Dear.

Due to the overwhelming number of consumers participating in this promotion, we regret to inform you that due to technical difficulties beyond our control the 1928 promotion has been suspended indefinitely.

Ouch.

Given that some of the emails that people on FT are talking about have just arrived in my inbox, I amguessing they are using Jetstars mail servers. :)

I wonder what solution they will come up with.

Whilst I was disappointed that I couldn't log in and therefore pick up a cheap room I am staggered that some over on FT think that suing LHW is a viable option.

LHW underestimated the demand and hence everything crashed. People missed out on a cheap room and spent some time chasing a very slim chance anyway. Big whoop. Sometimes a little bit of 'build a bridge' and some perspective is lacking. I wouldn't go as far to suggest that some of these posters might be from LOTFAP.

I am very impressed that LHW are trying to resolve the situation. I have been getting their emails pretty quickly so am holding off on a HKG booking for the next little while anyway.

Time for the next round. Just got an email from them, so hopefully it will work for them this time

I would like to once again express my gratitude for your continued support, understanding, and patience with The Leading Hotels of the World. Since October 1, we have explored and evaluated many solutions to the technological failures encountered during the online USD 19.28 Sale.

I am delighted to inform you that today we selected Akamai Technologies, Inc., the world premier web content delivery network, with clients such as Yahoo, Travelocity, and Amazon. Together we are working diligently to finalize a new procedure whereby you, as well as the other 150,000 registrants, will have a chance to secure one of the originally allotted 6,000 room nights that are available at the rate of USD 19.28.

...etc...

Hooray! Got a room!
2 nights at the Hotel Habita, Mexico City! :D

Was it? Too late! The website mentions that the sale has concluded....

It was on for 80 minutes starting 0100 AEDT on 24/10/08.
From the look of the FT thread you need to have submitted the form in the first few minutes to have had a shot.

No point in wasting time just in case the hotel I want is available when I am travelling. I don't think I am strange as the people that purchase cheap hotel rooms half way round the world at the times they do not need and then try to find a way to get there....

Well ok then.
Glad some of us could make us of it though
I was going to be in Mexico city anyway; this has just helped my budget out!

If you already planned to be somewhere, why wouldn't you at least try?
