Have a US trip ex SYD on 25th Oct to Denver. Question is: Do I got QF107 with an 8 hr stopover and catch up with a friend in LA and put up with a painful transit as LAX is renowned for, or go QF7 via Dallas Fort Worth, miss the catch up with friend and have a less stressful connection.

Note, would hire a car in LA to travel to 15 miles to friend's office in West Hollywood (if there's any other suggestions let me know) Catch up isn't essential, but would be cool.

Also need to know suggested check in times for AA check in to continue onto Denver. (Also note that I have a common name and am on the TSA watch list requiring secondary screening at all security check points.) Am QF Plat if that helps.

I think the bigger question is how do you cope with the DFW flight? After just going to LAX, I am usually exhausted and never feel like getting a connection. If you can handle the distance of DFW flight without any issue, then go for it.

Have you gotten yourself a TSA redress number? It may make the whole thing a bit more manageable from what I've heard.

THanks Harvy. Mate Ive applied for one and just waiting for confirmation.

I've transited both DFW (to Atlanta) and LAX (to BOI) and in neither case has the long flight affected me too much. However, I do get on any long haul plane expecting not to sleep, so stay awake (or doze) most of the way. Also, I don't drink any alcohol or take any sleeping pills.

Whilst LAX isn't easy, I wouldn't rule it out if you want to see a friend. After all, family and friends are what makes the world go around - well, my world anyway. In a few months time, I'm taking a LHR-IST flight to catch up with a friend that I had lost contact with for 13 years and found again via Facebook.

Can't help you with your other questions. Good luck.

How come such a long transit in LAX? Who would you be flying with (to LAX, to DEN)?

Would also throw up what airline and what class as a determinant...
eg. On QF A380Y > QF 747 Y retrofit >>> QF 747Y old

To WEst Hollywood depending exactly where you could do the shuttle to UCLA Westwood or to Union Station, then bus/taxi

Hey Serfty, purposely making the transit in LAX long enough to head into town and back. Otherwise i'll just be doing a quick connection. Flying AA onwards from LAX to Denver.

My understanding is that all the refit of 747's will be done by mid Cct so not too worried. Unless I'm mistaken and find out the hard way.

9 x 744 are getting a refit, there may be some of the 4 class operating via LAX.

You are almost certain to get a new config through DFW.

Had 2 nights in DFW before return to BNE recently, wife found one of the best shopping villages around and its massive, the Grapevine is a real true DFO if we ever saw one and just 10min $5 return shuttle away from Hyatt at airport (excellent hotel was $99 a night) big rooms, nice bar and food prices very reasonable. We picked up a $300 suitcase on 4 wheels for $90, also a fantastic ladies full leather lined fashion leather jacket was $345 paid $49!!, wife loves it, grabbed brand name shoes including few pairs of Sketchers at 1/3 price in OZ and are they comfortable. Nearby is the Historic Downtown Grapevine, a huge old town, looks like something out of the 1920's, the shops and stores there are open too.
