And having everything on hard drives has its risks for longevity. I stow my memory cards and buy a new one before each trip.

People haven't learnt about proper backups yet.. I've seen people lose hard drives and whine as they lost their photos..

IMO. Cloud storage is the way to go.

I am a little obsessive. My photos are stored on 2 computers, copied to an external hard drive and DVDs.I am strongly considering the cloud when I can finally understand the mumbo jumbo.

Cloud is literally a lot of fluff. This is from a person implementing cloud technology projects.

Aren't clouds things that forms, shift a bit, then breakup? hmm bad term in my opinion....Cloud is good, but requires that constant connectivity. Best method for storing photos is to backup on Hard Drives and CDs/DVDs/Blu-Rays..Actually the BEST method is physical print outs..but these days who does that...

Cloud is an apt description of my brain state without coffee, and I agree, its fluff, its a fancy name for offsite!

Don't tell the marketing people that....
OMG!

Used to have central mainframe with terminals

then pc standalone

then pc client communicating with mainframe

then pc client communicating with "application server" that communicated with mainframe (with a little direct mainframe access occasionally).

now pc client communicating with 'cloud' (wich is really an 'application server'/mainframe mix).

As far as backups go, I travel with at least an 8Gb USB with 'secure' data which gets backed up before and after each trip.

Actually there are two types of hard drives, those that have failed and those that are about to. I have my photos backed up at least twice before I reformat my memory cards. Lots of DVDs stored off site as well.

Dont forget flash has a finite number of write cycles!

Kodak to stop making cameras

Eastman Kodak says it will stop making digital cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames, marking the end of an era for the company that brought photography to the masses more than a century ago.

I would love to see them become a powerhouse in printers. Maybe develop an inkjet colour printer that doesn't use $80 of ink every 100 pages.
