VH-XBA (was originally VH-EBA hence "X" I think) City of Canberra.
Planes like ships tend to be referred to her in the English speaking world.

Out of curiosity, how big is the 707-100 compared with current day planes (i.e. dimensionally, and pax-load)? Is a 737-800 about the same size?

I visited the qantas museum in syd aiport and their is an older gentleman that works their ( forgot his name ) who has worked at qantas a long time; took me thru the musuem on a sort of personal tour telling me his own stories and memories he was sitting next to MARGE at the home comng; so if you want to know more history visit the musuem you may bump into this guy a wealth of info & fantatsic stories, it's the ex charimans lounge.

btw too young for this aircraft i do remember my first ever journey on Ansett mt gambier to melbourne via hamilton or portland one or the other even got a big juicy steak on board the fokker. what great memories!!

Not sure sorry of his name short guy skinny. Great stories if u get him. It 's a great place to watch the planes land and take off too.

Queensland is one of the few state governments that subsidise air travel. QF did not fly to Longreach before AN collapse. If QF pull out there will be another operator flying there as it is important to the local community.
I am surprised no one has not said that the new "owners" will close the museum but as far as I know it is in trust and not part of QF.....QF just supports it.

A thrilling documentary exploring a momentous occasion in Australian aviation history will be jetting to Channel 7 on Wednesday, April 4 at 7.30pm.
Australia now has back the first Boeing produced for Qantas – and the first sold outside of the US – more than 47 years after it first arrived Down Under.
The 1959 Boeing 707-1318B – known as the City of Canberra – which flew the likes of Fred Astaire, Gregory Peck and Bob Hope to our shores, has been restored to its former glory following one of aviation’s most technical restoration projects.
The painstaking process is captured in Return of the 707 – an hour-long documentary airing on Channel 7, which takes us back to the beginning of jet travel in Australia and details the arduous restoration process of the 707-1318B.
The jet was the first in Australian aviation history, making international travel more accessible and halving the flying time.
More than 60 volunteers put in 15,000 hours to restore the plane to its former glory, a feat believed to be unmatched in aviation history.
The volunteers came from all over Australia – former engineers, pilots and crew, all sharing a consuming passion for aviation – and helped along by a $1million grant from the Australian Government.
They scoured the world for the rare spare parts needed to get the aircraft back to flight readiness after it lay idle for six years in an English airfield at Southend-on-Sea.
The aircraft was earmarked for scrap until it was spotted by the Qantas Foundation Memorial (QFM) and following negotiations with the previous owner, the plane was gifted to the QFM who undertook the mammoth restoration project.
The City of Canberra’s final journey back to Australia was a 35,000km, eight-day journey through Ireland, the Canary Islands, Bermuda, the United States and Fiji.
The tour included a stop to visit Hollywood actor and Qantas ambassador John Travolta, who owns and pilots the last Qantas 707 in the fleet, which is painted in the Qantas livery of the 1960s. The documentary shows the two aircraft in Florida for an historical meeting.
It will fly to its new home at the Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach, Queensland at Easter.

Hi all,

My wife and I were out at Longreach last week-end to look over the 747-200 and the Qantas Founders museum. The 707 will be in LRE for easter only. It will be in LRE for good in a few Mths after that. Work is in progres to have it on display next to the 747. The tour of the 747 is well woth it if you are out at Longreach.. Helen, our guide was a gem, went way over the normal 1 hour tour of the 747. If you visit in the hot Mths do the tour early in the day as the air craft only has air-con at the very rear and the upper deck. Try the trip as we did, fly out and take the train back to BNE. Qld rail has good packages from time to time in the hotter Mths.

Qantas Screened this on my QF636 flight to BNE last night. It went for approx 30mins and showed signs of being edited from the original version.

Quite fascinating ...
