Worth noting that PER > OOL was only dropped by JQ 18 months ago only to be reintroduced.

JQ really want to own/pretty much dominate most of the AUS > DPS traffic, with ADL & BNE being introduced in the last 12 months or so & now CNS being added to the route network.

While the new JQ MEL > WEL service is great for competition, & a great connection between two very hip n happening cities, the flight timings are at very unsociable hours, particularly departing MEL. :(

But at $99 each way that's a steal!

Certainly looks like higher aircraft utilization from JQ for their A320s.

If JQ want to "own" the Bali market then they are welcome to it - a sinking AUD and decreasing discretionary spending from Australian based tourists, rubbish low yields and even cheaper and lower cost competitors with tonnes of capacity up the whazoo, sounds like a great way to lose money hand over fist to me. And what happens once everyone has been to Bali and doesn't want to go again? I must be the only person in Australia whom hasn't been there yet.

The timing of the DPS-CNS flights in both directions almost seems designed to prevent booking hotels.

The MEL-WEL service is obviously designed to hurt NZ's high yields but with those timings I can't see them worrying too much about JQ.

Presumably there must be some demand for the OOL-PER market for them to return to it after giving up 18 months ago.

Good commentary & observations, which I generally agree with particularly the falling AUD.

I too haven't been to Bali, so many other exciting places on the bucket list before Bali.

No doubt one day I will visit .

I wonder if SYD will be next to offer a direct JQ service to WEL?

The commentary around AUD only applies to making USD denominated hotel bookings in Bali, and general perceptions around the falling AUD. In reality, if booking in AUD (as many do) or if booking in IDR it is not that relevant as the AUD is still very strong against the IDR, and has barely moved against it this year.

As for the Bali comments many people don't have it on their bucket list, but it is still an OK, quite relaxing place to visit. Until I went there three years ago I was definitely in the avoid Bali camp - but as long as you avoid Kuta area it really is quite a pleasant place to visit with many reasonably priced and quite nice places to stay for a break. (Although with a proviso I have only visited after moving to Singapore , which is of course only 2.5hrs away and never from Aust. and each time I've been there I've seen people waiting for flights back to Australia and been very happy that I was in a very different crowd heading in the other direction!)

I appreciate your comments about Bali.

Sounds like one needs to explore the island Outside of the main tourist traps to obtain a better feel for the place.

I know here in MEL, Bali is a very popular overseas destination, not a week won't go by where I would overhear a conversation about the place from either someone going to or coming from Bali.

The direct flight times CNS/DPS/CNS are ridiculous, wonder what scatter brain came up with those, at least its under 5 hours in the sardine tin.

Maybe MEL WLG is designed to feed off QF10 into MEL to help build QFi, as well as others. MEL already has a red eye to AKL and perhaps that is working well for JQ.

Seems to me that people who haven't been to Bali shouldn't try and criticize it. For the record, I've been many times (going again in March) but I don't really like it. Just an interesting place to transit.

I can't imagine how CNS-DPS could ever turn a profit. No one in CNS would want to go and the people in DPS couldn't afford it. Maybe with the Pacific Peso plummeting (and the Reserve Bank cheering it on) they could afford it. At this rate we'll be having Parity Parties (and I'm not a Kiwi), but the good thing about that is that it will eff the NZ economy.

Did dummy booking for MEL-WLG , added a bundle and no mention of points or SC's on that page or the next.

The CNS-DPS flight times could work well for cheap self connections to Asia and beyond.

I noticed that as well.

And the price of the plus bundle is different on the different sectors...... What the?

On International routes you sometimes get different pricing for plus bundles for some reason. Perhaps to reflect cheaper prices in other countries?

True - seems the arrival times of early Friday, Sat and Sunday mornings could put you onto connecting flights with MH, SQ or possibly QR. Some other posters have mentioned that DPS could be a pretty horrible airport to transit in, plus the fact that separate bookings means that if your cheap flight from Australia to DPS is cancelled or delayed significantly then you will have completely lost/blown your onwards flights bookings. So - yes risky - but with some of the cheap J class flights ex-DPS some may find there are bargains to be had with onwards connections on GA, MH, SQ, QR, KE, KLM ?

But for CNS folk may be just easier and only a bit more expensive to fly CX to HKG or MI to SIN and connect onwards from there.

Booked on the CNS/DPS flights August/September. Hoping Jetstar doesn't can the flights before then.
Agree, get out of Kuta and you will see a different world. Recommend Yogyakarta/Mt Merapi/Borobudur/Prambanan for a trip
out of Bali.

If you're doing the separate booking thing I think it's wise to stopover in Bali for a couple of nights so you've got a safety buffer there. Why have the stress of whether JQ are going to schedule change or not when you can just have a relaxing night or two in Bali before your onward flights booked separately.

Although JQ will check bags through to other carriers if they have an interline agreement I wouldn't want to be in the position where I was going to mis-connect with another airline if the JQ flight CNS/DPS was late.

I agree completely with you OBB - once you start to look into the economics of separate bookings with the danger of late or rescheduled JQ flights and subsequent misconnections, sometimes when you add it all up (the costs of your "safety margin" such as accommodation, food, transfers etc, hassle of customs and immigration at DPS never being able to get a successful claim from travel insurance for separate bookings) then the onwards fare from DPS has to be unbelievably good value to make it worthwhile.

Or alternately, you are really planning on stopping in Bali anyway, in which case its worthwhile considering as there are a lot of different connections and options ex-DPS which don't exist in any Australian airports.

Economics are more than a straight dollar costing. There are three factors I take into account when booking tickets out of Bali; time; cost; and comfort. If it is business trip and time is of the essence, then it may not work. But the cost and comfort of flying J out of Bali cannot be matched and time is something most of us have some control over. The added bonus is that one way J flights back to Australia from many asian ports are also affordable.
We could never afford to travel J internationally if we flew directly out of Australia - travel out of Bali makes it all possible.

I don't know whether an OOL/PER flight is going to be viable because when you need to take on extra fuel for headwinds, 177 pax on an A320 isn't going to cut it. When they had to cap the BNE/PER flight because of weight restrictions is was easier to accommodate affected pax on QF or VA non-stop flights however OOL will prove more of a challenge.
