JQ launches CNS DPS, OOL PER and MEL WEL

I don't know whether an OOL/PER flight is going to be viable because when you need to take on extra fuel for headwinds, 177 pax on an A320 isn't going to cut it. When they had to cap the BNE/PER flight because of weight restrictions is was easier to accommodate affected pax on QF or VA non-stop flights however OOL will prove more of a challenge.

Good point - maybe its an aircraft network or positioning thing? I understand that JQ has crew bases in SYD, MEL, ADL and OOL? Did they end up closing CNS and DRW crew bases? If I was a betting man I reckon its got something to do with aircraft and/or crew rotations and rosters. Maybe they will just sell the aircraft up to 80-90% capacity and take the financial pain of a row or 2 of empty seats.

Also no competition between PER and OOL direct services from VA QF or TT so no price beat pain there, but I agree the distance and prevailing winds are really stretching the capabilities of the A320 aircraft plus the and lack of ability to just palm off pax off onto QF will make it ans interesting one to manage. Will be interesting to see how the services go.

I don't know if they could risk doing that without offering some significant compensation, remember that a lot of the pax will be OOL based FIFO people flying home at the end of their roster, you would expect quite a bit of pushback and/or a ruckus being kicked up at PER if that was the case.

With the headwinds and range limitations of the A320s - wouldn't it be flying the other way from OOL-PER that would have the fuel/load limitations associated with strong headwinds? Strong headwinds from the west would be limiting the A320 for the OOL to PER flights, in which case JQ could have problems trying to redirect offloaded passengers leaving OOL and going to PER. The best they could offer is flying the next day on JQ but that definately wouldn't cut the mustard for people who have to be in Perth to get connecting flights to work/mine sites.

Whats to say they are not using the 321s?

Agreed. It will depend on the winds on the day of course. But when you click through the Flightaware data of the previous days, there are some that go even further south than as the crow flies almost overflying ADL (https://uk.flightaware.com/live/flight/QFA767/history/20141210/1015Z/YBBN/YPPH), while others go in an S-pattern further north as per your link.
