I am getting annoyed at the constant adds Jetstar have about double the price difference if you can find a cheaper fare on another airline at a comparable time. No amount of time is indicated in the add as to what a comparable time is. I found what I thought was one, Virginblue at 8.20 am Syd - Mcy 25th Nov @ $65 and Jetstar 9.30 am @ $149. However the comparable time has to be maximum an hour and this was 1 hour 10 minutes, which I considered a comparable time. They wouldn't accept that, so ofcourse I booked Virgin. As Qantas club member I like to fly Jetstar so I can use the club, but not at that price difference. I don't think this guarantee is worth much if they have that tight a frame on it.

It's just a marketing gimmick to hook people and then shaft them - standard sales practice really.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

They advertise it here in Perth as well. I think is is safe given the competition that they face on PER-AVV.

The guarantee is not worth much if they consider a comparable time within an hour. I thought an hour and ten minutes was comparable, but not to Jetstar.

For long haul international, it just has to be the same day:

The applicable flight on the other airline must be a direct flight for the exact route departing and arriving at the same airports as the applicable Jetstar flight, and must be scheduled to depart:
  • within 1 hour of the applicable Jetstar flight, in the case of domestic Australia and short haul international flights (ie direct flights wholly within Australia, or direct flights between Australia and Singapore or New Zealand); or
  • on the same day as the applicable Jetstar flight, in the case of long haul international flights (ie direct flights between Australia and other Jetstar international destinations).

I'd say you're better off spending $65 with DJ and having the $84 in your pocket than spending $149 with JQ and having a $168 voucher.

At the end of the day, you'd be spending $84 just to get a $168 JQ voucher which you have to use within 6 months.

News from JQ today is that the guarantee has been extended to cover international flights.

http://www.jetstar.com/pdf/news/20070724c.pdf

The guarantee applies ... "against competitors directly operating the same long haul international city pair on the same day of travel"

If this is for one way flights, I imagine JQ would rarely have to pay out on this guarantee, except for DRW-SIN route.

Taking the MEL-BKK route as an example it would be rare indeed that the JQ flight one way would cost more than TG's one way fare, as TG tend to price competitively on a return basis. However, I have seen TG's return fares cheaper than JQ's return fares for the same day. I wonder if the guarantee applies in those situations? (the pdf above refers the same city pair on the same day of travel, not same days of travel).

Also I bet the guarantee does not factor in a "like for like" comparison (on TG from MEL you get AVOD, a pillows & blanket, meals, drinks included in the fare, but on JQ these cost an extra $47 each way ).

I would spend $149 anyday to get back a $168 voucher, virtually means I end up with a free flight, maybe two if I can get a sale next time. Normally I try and fly on sale fares, but this one is for a cruise that departs and returns to Sydney, so I am stuck with exact dates. The 6 months is not a problem as I go to Sydney at least once a month. My whole grouch is that 1 hour 10 minutes is a comparable time and these constant adds do not tell you that it must be within an hour  .
