Lets hope their Flight Management System in the Scarebusses is better built and tested than their customer-facing IT systems  .

I managed to book a couple of seats for a return trip to Melbourne - got on quickly, but it was still 'processing' the sale when I gave up and went to sleep last night, however all confirmed this morning. However I booked a day return trip - down in the morning, home in the evening, what I have this morning is now down in the morning, back in the next day - not sure how that happened:?: I did check that both flights were for the same day before I hit the final button:confused:
The southbound was processed yesterday, before midnight, and the northbound was processed this morning, after midnight. The system clock ticked over to a new day and so did your booking :p .

Jetstar bid to mop up discretionary dollars

JETSTAR last night launched its "biggest ever" sale, in an attempt to head off the planned entry of the Singapore Airlines-backed Tiger Airways into the domestic market.
Amid speculation Tiger has chosen Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport as its new domestic hub, the Jetstar sale has fuelled talk the Qantas budget offshoot might be looking to spoil an imminent announcement from its new low-cost rival.
"They probably heard Tiger is about to announce something," said the executive chairman of the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, Peter Harbison.
Jetstar has sent out teaser emails of the planned sale to its 200,000-odd Jetmail subscribers since Friday, and urged people to sign up their friends and family for the sale.
"It does suggest that the AOC [Air Operators Certificate application] is proceeding pretty quickly for Tiger," Mr Harbison said. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority declined to comment on the progress of Tiger's AOC. But there is talk the airline could have permission to fly commercially in Australia as soon as September. Tiger has so far declined to provide an update on its progress.
Mr Harbison said Jetstar might be aiming to dent early demand for Tiger flights. "They might want to mop up a whole lot of discretionary spending before Tiger enters the market," he said.
While Tiger is yet to indicate where it plans to fly, Mr Harbison said Jetstar might instead target "the routes they think Tiger will enter".
Tiger has hinted it might replicate its route structure in Asia, where it flies a mixture of leisure and main city trunk routes.
It is expected Tiger will not only target domestic routes but the booming outbound demand for flights to Asia, which Jetstar has already attempted to tap.
Tiger could do this by linking its domestic network to its international network, which connects through Darwin and Perth.
Tiger was expected to announce its Australian base last week when its shareholders - Singapore Airlines, Indigo Partners, Temasek and the Ryan family - were due to hold a board meeting last week.
"We've heard nothing," said Brisbane Airport spokesman Jim Carden, who dismissed suggestions the airport's domestic terminal did not have enough space for Tiger's five aircraft.
"There's space now and there will be space in the future," he said, noting the airport had plans for a "substantial expansion" of the terminal later this year.
Melbourne Airport spokesman Tom Perry said: "We haven't heard anything." But he said the airport did have plenty of room.

Well as expected Jetstar's sale fell over for me again...received the link at 8.25pm eventually logged in and found a flight - Mel-Lau return, booked it, gave credit card details and was waiting for confirmation and then the system kicked me out, tried numerous attempts again to log in and at the same time was calling their call centre that had a pre rec message that the system was overloaded and they could not take my call..kep trying till 10.30pm .called Jetstar this morning and was advised that they are very busy at sale times and could not explain why it accepted my cc number and then kicked me out, no apology either. Hope others had better luck than me

Well it seems that, despite all my complaining, I didn't go too badly.

Managed SYD-AVV-SYD at the end of October for 2 people ($20), SYD-AVV-SYD first weekend in November for 2 people ($20) and SYD-AVV-SYD at the end of November for 4 people ($24). On the first two bookings I used the credit card before realising I was paying a 67% credit card surcharge (!), so then switched to direct deposit.

You have to wonder about the value of these sales. They cost JQ more than they make, they can't use it to "direct people to more expensive services" because they whole website goes down, people come away thinking "god that was painful, what a **** airline" regardless if they got tickets or not and finally (of course), it is beyond unprofessional.

I guess that raises the next question, what will Tiger do? They've got to better $3, $1? They might as well make them for free then.... ;)

Hi Guys,

I guess I had a littl bit of luck with mine- I logged on about 10.30 last night and had the similar problems as everyone else. Until 11, I had managed to get results but was being kicked out at credit card processing. Between 11 and 12 though when everyone gave up, the system worked relatively well and I managed to get littl_flier's family on three trips. As i'm Brissy based, I did notice that Newcastle had limited availability so I just booked a one way and will pick up a $39 sale fare for the return later in the year. Plenty of availability on Rocky (let's face it- who would go there for holiday), but extended family there meant booking two trips. The system did kick me out multiple times but with persistence I got them!

The fares seemed to end at midnight though because I was in the process of booking myself to actually try Jetstar (for $6 and Qantas Club brekky, why not :D ) on a BNE-ROK-BNE return, ie. same plane, same day. Of course the system told me I needed to allow 90 minutes between flights so when I went to book two one ways, all the sale fares were gone. :(

Oh well, at least I earnt some brownie points with the family so they get a trip while I'm in New York!!! :D :D :D

All up, for $30 bucks, a pretty good night indeed.

PS. Love all your advice guys!!! :p

Probably lucky in that it didn't let you do that. JQ only allow you to check in at the departure airport (ie: no online, no quickcheck and no checking in at the same time as your first flight) so had you booked those tickets you'd have missed the 30min checkin cutoff and hence been stuck in Rocky.

Very lucky indeed- thanks danielribo. The joys of still being an amatuer ... and having a corporate policy only to fly on QF metal. ;) I have a feeling that the cost of then getting home would have far outweighed the joy of the trip in the first place.

Realistically, I don't think that paraticular sale had anything to do with Tigers entry into Australian domestic service.

Long after the pain of this sale is removed from people's minds (oh and little "details" like the only flights from BNE were to ROK and NTL), Jetstar will still be telling people:

Previous sale events have included the $3 (all inclusive) flights to many cities.

Oooh. $3 tickets. Quick. Let's jump onto the next sale!

(and yes, I agree with all of your points. Flights are a time sensitive market with lots of competition).

One has to ask whether it's worth it or not. --- Both for the airline and the traveller :!:

A website that worked would be better (even if the fares were $5)

I really hope Tiger does NOT offer one dollar , three dollar or whatever fares.
It causes a website meltdown, and successful freeloaders dissapointing higher value repeat customers.

Make it a flat 50 dolllars (everything included),- a slogan like no tricks, and a variable voucher discount basing on flight popularity ( if necessary) for your next trip. Make people earn their discount by collecting Tiger discount dollars.

Then have a 'Could you please accept my offer of $xx..xx for this flight email forms because of (insert good excuse) , and manage the load by reading the highest bids first.

But please do somethig different, novel than the others. Howabout another discount if they wave their QF FF cards - and give out their SMS numbers.
Hurt the others, by offering business people 10 syd-mel tickets for say $800, no tricks, inclusive, anytime, limit ....

The trick is not to discount, but to whiteant business travellers off the others early, with a limited corporate promotion.

When Ansett had $66 tickets, I flew heaps - becaise I knew I stood a 80% chance of 'winning'. I WANT to pay MORE to avoid wasting my time for that elusive deal.
