Presumably this route is subsidised via the NSW (Destination NSW) Aviation Attraction Fund for 2 years as part of the broader initiatives of the Visitor economy 2030.

How would a DPS destination promote NSW and for that matter the Newcastle region to be the "premier visitor economy of the Asia Pacific by 2030".??

It’s also a way of getting around capacity limitations between the two countries ;)

They don’t have a crew base in NTL so not sure how crewing works with this one.

No different to anywhere else with most of the crew coming out of their coughet base that cannot be supplied from the Bali base which was doing heavy recruiting last month. Australian crews will probably come from Altara sourced casuals.

If you don't feel like logging into facebook: Newcastle ready for global take-off with first international flight outside Australasia

It makes sense, ofc, considering the population demographic. I hope it suceeds for Newcastle's sake, but I imagine it's always going to be cheaper exSYD.

Does anyone know what aircraft they're using? I can't see the flights loaded in anywhere.
Will the bogons in Newcastle support this cultural oppopportunity?

So is NTL really a bunch of CUBs or is there an expanding (urban) population in Newcastle that is ripe for provisioning viable international traffic instead of conceding everyone to SYD (let alone WSI when it opens)?

Not sure how anyone in NTL feels about travelling internationally when they must go to SYD, i.e. how much of a bother is that vs flying straight out of NTL, no matter how "inferior" (or even more expensive) that might be.

Certainly traffic from DPS to NTL is a bigger challenge. Barring the returning residents, how do you promote a route like that? Hunter Valley?

Overnight flight DPS-NTL in a 321LR..ouch.
I always said whether a route should be offered because it is an opportunity or only offered if it is done properly.

Given how long narrow bodies have plied DPS routes (and they fill up the flights, even in Y), seems JQ's gamble that people will fly and put up with that in either direction is not completely crazy.

I hear there is movement by the council who manage the airport to change the suburb of Broadmeadow to Bintang

Not sure if DPS qualifies for the NSW Aviation Fund as it is a largely outbound destination.

Some of the Social Media on the various large MSM sites on this announcement has already complained about the cost of the NTL Airport upgrade, so no surprise they seem to be complaining about their "taxpayer money" being used to "subsidise bogans" to Bali.

I mean, it's a bit of both - the NTL catchment area is anywhere up to probably Forster (you could make the argument that it extends to Tamworth/Port Mac if those populations aren't flying QF for cost reasons), but there was a bit of a migration out of Sydney due to cost of living - especially true during COVID.

The population demographic is quite heavily towards the Bali crowd IMO - lots of people my age are keen on it, and they'd just get dropped at NTL every day of the week, even if its slightly more expensive than exSYD.
