Jetstar DUTY FREE Carry On prohibited

@ ethernet. Scoot are fine, you get what you pay for, and can buy DF ex SIN. Sydney "DF" is hardly cheap, $40 dearer on a cologne, maybe $30 dearer on a 17 y.o. whiskey!

  1. Jetstar is a Low Cost Carrier. Like other LCCs (Tiger, et al) you get what you pay for, which is usually a seat and not much more.
  2. If you want full service with the bells and whistles, don't use a LCC.
  3. This issue hasn't been one for me for decades. I gave up buying DF alcohol at point of departure, instead purchasing it at point of arrival. Q: Why? A: Less hassles; Taking heavy glass projectiles full of (in some cases) flammable liquids is madness from a safety perspective and I'm not sure why the industry hasn't banned it long ago (you would not be able to take a 1.25 Litre bottle of methylated spirits (i.e. alcohol) onboard and A/C so why a bottle of, say brandy?). Anyone who's seen the inside of an A/C that's done a very heavy landing or worse been in a crash will be aware that overhead lockers frequently open and disgorge their contents on impact.
  4. It adds unnecessary weight the A/C increasing fuel consumption, so from the operators point of view it's a cost impost, and for the environmentally conscious pax this alone should be enough to get your heckles up.
  5. If the theory about pax consuming DF booze onboard is correct, this reason alone is justification for JQ's policy, and particularly so out of places like DPS and HKT where cashed up Aussies, Brits and Kiwis have a penchant for Fly In Fly Out boozathons, with some thinking it's OK to extend their holiday antics on the A/C to the discomfort and annoyance of their fellow pax.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Make no mistake if JQ - or anyone quotes or misleads and claims 'government regulations' then this is misleading and deceptive conduct that needs correction. I'll be reporting this on my next trip if I see or record it.

Market Failure, and pis* poor deregulation is to blame. There are innovative solutions. The 'Industry' has not pushed them.
Inefficiency is usually regulatory. Singapore and Dubai have a vision, and are measurably more successful and better at a good impression on arrival.

In the name of safety, greenness and efficiency, Australians deserve the right to competitive DF on arrival. But it is not so.
Like the ACCC software pricing inquiry, a bunch of carpetbaggers say 'we will charge what the market can bear' - 30-70% more. Airport rents are also excessive.
Innovations.
0) Assessment: How much is being imported bypassing DF on arrival. 50% ?
1) Removal of sole importer and distribution rights for items exclusive of tax or duties under $50 dollars.
2) Promise to increase this limit, unless importers and distributors get the message that the good times are over.
3) Heavy fines for refusal to supply, and automatic permits for importers who can import cheaper than the cheapest local price.
4) Temporary permits for Woolies, Coles and Aldi to make a few special bulk imports for items with proven Geo-discrimination cost prices
5) If D/F on arrival will match any other DF price IF booked before departure. This is not done, because everyone knows their cost prices are higher than some others sell prices.
In any case there are other regulations to prevent this - a blanket discriminatory policy is just wrong - assuming exceptions are not possible or not documented.

Companies can discriminate on whatever the hell they like (unless it is one of the defined types under anti-discrimination legislation).

So get over it, or come back and complain when they refuse to sell you DF alcohol because you are gay, jewish or in a wheelchair.

Agree with you re SIN and DXB. Both places have proactive governments prepared to make long term plans and policies then act on them, and not become beholden to focus groups and public opinion poles. The results speak for themselves.

It seems to me that there is a lot of misinformation here. The facts are:

1. Airlines flying from Indonesia to Australia allow carry-on duty free alcohol of more than 100ml provided that the duty-free store delivers the goods to the gate after passenger security screening. This service has nothing at all to do with the airline except for the fact that both Jetstar and Qantas will not allow duty free alcohol to be delivered to the gate of their flights. Why? I don't know.

2. The assertion by MelUser that "Qantas does not trust the Indonesian airport security system so it has a secondary screening - ie Xray bomb checks, the works at their gates" implies that other airlines do not have secondary screening at the gate. That implication is incorrect. In my experience all airlines departing from Indonesia have secondary screening at the gates.

Finally, I believe that it is ludicrous to suggest that duty free alcohol is not permitted on Qantas and Jetstar flights because passengers would otherwise open their bottles on the flight. If this were true why is it that other airlines don't prevent this by banning duty free carry on alcohol?

Does QF/JQ have a deal with duty free shops in Australia?

It wouldn't surprise me in the least! However, given that those licenced thieves MacQuarie Bank own the airport these days, SDF would be up for huge rent, plus the greed of the Excise Dept, could well contribute to the high prices. Our small market base could be a factor also. Sadly today, all businesses are not satisfied with good profits, they must get "obscene" profits! :(

You were able to get QFF points previously from Nuance group DF shops. This practice has ceased.

To me this indicates that there may have been some form of agreement previously.

Even more to this is the fact DF purchased in SYD enroute to Greek Isle cruise was confiscated at Heathrow as Australia does NOT have an entry permit with the EU on DF products!!! What the )(&%???? I had them pull out the "rule book" a massive book some 6 inches thick as they (English customs) were confused themselves. Took several months but I did get our $ from the DF store chain involved, luckily I wrote down the store mgrs name where we purchased as she too look up her DF "bible" as I asked before we purchased. I guess the DFbibles differ per country and per company, afterall, it's not about a passengers experience, rather experiencing at passengers wallet and lightening it as much as possible. Travel seems to be a secondary motive.

Do Jetstar still not allow duty free to be bought ex DPS? I'm thinking of taking the other half over for a birthday weekend and the bar is running a little dry.

Was OK when I last was there (late last year) in the new terminal. Just ask the airport DF store to be 100% sure.

Haven't tried for several months but certainly was what we encountered just before Christmas. It's a joke, just the same as trying to take DF through Bristish customs as Australia does not have a DF treaty with Britian. Argued for half an hour with them over that one!
