Is Qantas pocketing carbon offset payments?

It has come to my attention that carbon offsets I had paid on my flights had not been attributed to the fl;ights, nor had I received any reward points or green tier leaf for contributing in this way.

So is Qantas undertaking deceptive conduct and pocketing funds paid on carbon offsets? Or is it a question of incompetence rather than deceit?

Thoughts?

I have never had such issues, it's always appeared on my Frequent Flyer activity statement just fine.

Still looks dodgy, and I question why Qantas' bean counters don't reconcile the payments and realize they are not doing the right thing. Stuff-ups with your tax are still considered tax fraud, for example.

One common reason for carbon offsets not granting the FF member a green leaf towards their tally for Green FF status, is that the flight booking was attributed to a Qantas Business Rewards account, in which case the carbon offset is also attributed to the QBR account and not the individual FF account of the passenger.

I note you did not answer my question in the other thread.
  1. Did you get a receipt email for the carbon offset?
  2. Did the bookings you offset have an ABN for QBR attached to them?
  3. If so, did the QBR account get the offset points?
My experience in offsetting 3 QBR linked bookings is:
  1. I got an email receipt for all of the offset attempts.
  2. The offset points went to the QBR Account.
  3. I did not get a green leaf.
Yes, carbon offset acknowledged and receipted by qantas. Green ticket NOT linked to my personal account.

Please share all of the information, otherwise it is impossible to provide informed speculation to your question.

I am aware of that. But my QBR account did not receive the points either.

So what you’re saying is I need to book the flight without the abn, claim the credits and the leaf and then add the abn to the booking all in the name of getting that pesky leaf? that’s nuts.
I don't think anyone here is suggesting there is logic or reason to the process, but it has been reported by several AFF members that if the flight to which the carbon off-set has been applied is also linked via an ABN to a QBR account, then the carbon offset green leaf does not apply to the FF member account.

I applied the carbon offset to a classic award flight and of course there is little point in applying ABN/QBR to a classic award, so the green leaf was applied to my FF account.

Say what? I paid for the flight with cash so what gives?
Unfortunately, the payment method (cash, FF award using points, travel credit etc.) makes no difference to the way Qantas determines if a flight with the carbon offset applied will meet their requirements for the green leaf. If an ABN/QBR account has been linked to the flight, Qantas determines that the green leaf does not apply to the FF membership. Personally, I think its wrong and I expect it probably came about due to some unexpected logic in their programming, but that is how it works at the moment and Qantas does not seem to see it as fault/failure but as a feature and does not appear to have any plans to change the logic applied.

If I can apply it to a classic reward flight, and I don't take the flight, is the leaf still awarded?

Sorry, I do not know the answer to that one. I did take the flight (to visit my grandchild). I think in my case the green leaf arrived after I had taken the flight, but that may have just been coincidental timing due to short lead time between applying the offset and taking the flight.

My carbon offset request often seems to get stuck at that “requested” but never process.

At other times, it processes immediately.

I blame QF IT gremlins rather than conspiracy.

Yes it is, within 7 days of making the booking. You can do anything you like with the booking after the leaf appears - take the flight, cancel it , up to you, the leaf will stick . You will pay the points penalty for cancelling the flight though . And you won’t get the points used for the offset back, so if planning to cancel the flight make it a cheap one!

Or book an award flight far enough ahead in time on a route you think QF may make a significant flight change and then you might be able to get a full refund if the change results in QF's inability to find you a suitable alternate flight.
