IPad opinions?

I have been thinking about the 7in screen and last weekend when I didnt want to carry around my satchel+ipad it would have been useful - but I can't see 7in replacing my iPad.

Competition is good though :)

Not true in all cases. The iPad was 2-3 months between announcement and launch (longer for us colonials). But the new MBA was out immediately.

As I said *refreshes* not new products.

Whilst people may assume new iPhones are coming around July (and yes, they have been July for all models), no one knows what the new models will bring.

There was a huge difference between the first and second gen iPhones, but the 3GS was nothing more than a CPU and memory bump. The iPhone 4, obviously, was very different and expected due to the a) leak, b) the fact there had been no real re-design for 2 years.

The usual sign of a refresh is when the supply channel dries up. Then it's time to not buy things. Apple don't like having stock when new things arrive, and history has proved that they won't just announce with ample stock of current supplies available.

(not to mention the current iPad was only released in Russia and a few other countries, today).

I got bored and frustrated with my Ipad .... Sold it and bought a Kindle after I found out that most of the time I only used it for reading books.

In the end the money would of better been spent on a 11" macbook air.
# Frustratingly hard to type on keyboard
# Doesn't matter which way you hold it - its uncomfortable to hold.
# Reading books on it kept me awake.
# Wireless reception wasn't anywhere as good as my iphone.
# And traveling with it was a cough - mostly because hotel wireless will allow 2 wireless products on the one account (laptop and Iphone)
# No Printing (although I am aware this will come later)
# And I get bored of games easily.

Now if only the MBA had 3g....

I'm the total opposite here. When the iPad was announced I openly declared 'what a waste of a product'. Since using it, I've had my thoughts do a complete 180º.

It's perfect for travelling, and the screen is great when watching movies on long flights (QF's AVOiD sucks generally). Typing on it is simple, I can easily touch type on it, with not much less speed or accuracy issues than a normal keyboard, although I do need to slightly alter my style of typing. Printing works well (I'm running betas and it's great). I don't play games except Scrabble on my iPad. Web Browsing is great, and I definitely get better signal on the iPad than my iPhone (and it has true .n, in the 5gHz range, unlike the iPhone 4 which only has 2.4gHz .n).

I am on mine now at 4.38 am so I am a fan.
Have read all my work emails so I don't have a day of getting up to speed on stuff.
Working just 3 days a week does take a bit of getting used to but I think I am making some progress.

Loving 4.2 on the iPad already - this is how it should have been.

Multi-tasking/quick app launch - great. Works well in Words with Friends - which was really annoying me.

Unified inbox - I hadn't realised how much I was missing this.

Folders - this will make a big difference.

Airplay - liking the look of this. Not sure how useful it will be though - at home on WiFi I can easily stream from my iMac to the Apple TV and there is nothing on my other iOS devices that isn't on my iMac (other than iOS apps). Might be useful to stream specific music that is on my iPhone to save me wading through every album on my iMac...

Haven't really explored the other features (customisable tones not that useful as my iPhone is on silent or plugged into my bluetooth headphones).

Will report back later - need to do some work now :(

Say an iPad go bouncing along the floor in a train carriage this morning.

Young woman was watching a TV show; had one of those iPad jacket/frames that can be used to prop it up at an angle but that was not enough. She tilted it more; the train lurched a little, it started to fall; she snatched at it but only succeeded in propelling the iPad down to the floor with a bounce or two, a cartwheel then sliding to a stop two metres along the carriage.

Did not get a post script as we were arriving at my destination.

when is the update due out?

I love mine, didnt get 3G though throught to distrust of tecos to keep their side of the bargain.

How much is it costing to run 3G - typically? Users thoughts here?

Its out now, and as for costs, $20 a month for 3G should suit most users.

In the family we have 2 iPhones (both 3GS) and a 3G iPad. AS I linked my iPad to my iPhone accounts I have a post paid $15/month plan (no contract) which gives me 1gig of data plus a bonus of 500MB plus another bonus of 500MB for being an existing 3 subscriber.

It is way more than enough for my needs.

You can also get 12 months for $150 with 12GB on Telstra now - just launched.

I'll be switching to that at my next recharge, because I can't even use the data that I have now (I have ~14GB built up) :)

Hmm - airplay is a bit laggy for photos and I can't seem to stream music from my iPhone to the apple TV. Works ok with the iPad music to Apple TV but not the iPhone...

EDIT

Rebooted the iPhone and seems fine now.

Just updated my iPhone, will be looking very seriously at an AppleTV now, given that I’m getting an '11n' network tomorrow too.

Good news! It seems like the upcoming 4.3 iOS will let the user decide whether or not the switch on the side of the unit will be orientation lock or mute. I'm actually still on version 3 because I didn't want to lose my orientation lock (and I like my jailbroken system, but that's another story)!

It has been confirmed by multiple independent sources that this is the case. I've seen it with my own eyes ;)

I don't know why Apple changed it. The press-and-hold volume down to mute was just fine, and the hardware orientation switch makes sense (if you lock it in landscape, put it in it's dock to charge and try and unlock it, you have to unlock it 'on its side' to change it back).
