Qantas Airways and Golf Australia have teamed up on a new initiative that will allow the airline’s Frequent Flyer members to earn points and even an official handicap while participating in the popular sport.

Qantas Golf Club is a new online community that will also allow members to book tee times online, receive exclusive invitations to attend golf events and tournaments and access travel packages to visit some of the world’s best golf courses.

All 10 million Qantas Frequent Flyer program members can join and there will be a choice of a basic, free membership or a premium membership that includes the ability to obtain an official Golf Australia handicap.

Golf Australia chief executive Stephen Pitt said the Qantas Golf Club was poised to be a key pillar in the sport’s development strategy.

“This exciting new club is a terrific offering to the 800,000 social golfers in Australia each year, many of who will be Qantas Frequent Flyer members,” he said. “We see real potential for this program to have a positive effect on participating golf clubs through increased foot traffic, rounds played, club marketing and membership opportunities.”

Australian golf legend and Qantas ambassador Greg Norman has endorsed the new club, calling it an “incredible value add” to the Frequent Flyer program.

Qantas Frequent Flyer members who sign up for a premium membership at the launch will receive a bonus 5000 Qantas points.

OMG, if you hadn't provided an actual QF web site link I would have thought that you were taking the p1ss and checked whether it was 1st April.

I just registered my interest

Another example where we, the QFF members, are the product being sold to boost QF's bottom line ( via Golf's purchase of QFF points and it's probably paid a fee to access the QFF membership).

I vaguely remember a discussion on this a while back.

I think it will be out of my price range.

Would love to know what you the value will be. If Greg Norman states, "Its an incredible value add" then it must be good....

That's why QF Loyalty have created a Basic - Free level of membership. Especially for JohnK - :D

Sounds a bit like RACV golf membership ($228), one obvious difference is this is going to be a national program.

I suspect it is targetted to the corporate golfer who is not already a member of a golf club.

I have some contact with GA and on first read it looks like this is a product that they are launching to replace the Crown Lager Social Golf Club experiment, with the difference being that an official GA handicap is part of the deal. GA are desperate to tap into the social golfer market and offering a GA handicap is the sweetner

I think we would all be happier if QF put as much effort into improving their airline as they do in finding ways to flog more FF points to more organisations.

I'm certain that "airline" would still be on their list of operations, can't guarantee which spot..

Lets face it. Running an airline is such a PITA. Fuel price rises, unpredicatable political instability, economic downturns, whinging customers. Much easier to focus on selling points to commercial customers and let the punters fight it out for the toasters.

After all the "enhancements re Jul" they pull this magic out of their hat?
QF would have more of my respect by not doing the Jul 14 changes.

The handicap sounds great. I've just joined a 10 year waiting list and got back into the game. Looking to travel etc as well. Barnbougle and the like.

Patience. Sooner or later QF will introduce a program awarding points for km flown on certain airline groups... Oh wait...
