So what's the take home message: International duty free is not compelling enough to divert one's spending dollars?

Do you research. Know the prices of different items at home.

FWIW, Generally speaking Singapore Changi DF is cheaper for a lot of spirits, but more expensive for wine. But naturally it varies by product / SKU. A number of other airports are excessively expensive IMHO, and your best bet is just going to the lounge.

Airport rents are high, so much of the tax saving is chewed up by rent and profit for the airport DF shops.

My take home is the DF is only good for spirits. Not wines, sparkling or still.

But that Krug price is good compared to DMs.

Anything consistently outstanding in KUL or SIN DF
Quickstatus did you not see the pics and prices I posted? I also said I do requests - if you are interested in something mainstream ask away - I will try to help - difficult to read minds my friend.

I don't go into DF shops and I hate shopping. I was thinking as I will be in those airports I might have a look if there is something compelling that I can't get anywhere else. I have nothing in mind I want to get and I'm sure DF shops don't sell skis or skiboots.

I am not into spirits so don't find such items "outstanding"

You guys obviously haven't priced the wines at JNB recently? If you like the SA wines the prices are "very economical"

Happy wandering

Fred

I am aware that exceptions apply - again it depends what you want, and which airport...

DF shopping in SIN is easy and painless. If you know what spirits you want (wine is expensive), go straight in, pay, and straight out. The bottles are delivered to your gate - no need to lug them around. Under this method there's not really much downside over buying on arrival in Australia (essentially just carrying it down the jet bridge in SIN and back up the jet bridge in Australia).

This topic also got quite a bit of airtime on Facebook last night.

At the end of the day - some things are cheaper Duty Free, but some things are not. Do your research, and make your own decision based on the specific products that interest you.

I love wine, but almost never buy wine Duty Free as prices are usually MORE expensive than local bottle shops (South Africa is one exception). I also like drinking premium spirits. At some ports (e.g. SIN) they are cheaper than domestic bottle shops. At some ports I never buy anything (HKG, PEK, LAX, etc).

On FB drewbles reminded us that the best way to buy alcohol to take out of the USA is to visit a local liquor chain on your last day, and pack it in your checked baggage as they are even cheaper than duty free stores (even when you are paying all the associated taxes including state sales tax).

isnt checked luggage alcohol classified as dangerous material - flammable category?

Less than 24% ABV is not considered flammable / dangerous at all. 24% to 70% ABV is pretty low risk. I believe you can carry up to 5 liters in checked luggage without any issue.

With alcohol they are far more concerned with you consuming your own alcohol on-board, or bringing LAGs > 100mL as hand carry.

A few snaps from DF store in PEK last Sat - I was only able to get these handful of pics before being booted from store - the Baileys comes with a 200ml bonus so 1.2ltr total - I am sure you can all do conversion - A$1 = RMB(¥)4.94:

I had intended to try to get a broad range but in true typical Chinese fashion my photographic intentions were not appreciated and hence my visit to DF Store short lived.

Perhaps you should have picked up a spy camera when you were in Beijing? :p

CE - stuff like Smirnoff vodka can be real bargains in China - $15 a litre is pretty good! - assuming it's the real stuff (which DF should be ok, theoretically). They also do a Smirnoff Black for just a few CNY more which is good value.

Dan Murphy is AUD35 for 700ml.
