As yohy pointed out in another thread:
as with all things: SIN = safe and boring, HKG = colourful and challenging
HKG certainly challenging on the wallet if you want DF!

But lets not stop there - wine also"

St Hugo SIN- S$75 = A$75.12

St Hugo HKG - HK$495 = A$89.62

Please feel free to post all and any duty free price examples from any airport near and far.

Sheesh!

A little steep for the St. Hugo? Dan Murphys for $32.75AUD a bottle, most others around the $37 to $40AUD mark.

Edit: For a 2012, I do see a few 2010 in the pic

I do recall being underwhelmed with HKG DF prices. I can't say that SIN has struck me as much better than SYD in the past, but those examples are pretty good. Current SYD price for twin pack of BS is A$68. Slightly cheaper than the sign in SIN suggested for Oz but still a lot more!

Do they do arrivals DF in SIN? I know its all there together, but the few times I've purchase liquids, they've been delivered to a departure gate.

Don't know about arr DF purchases - dep purchase for Oz must be min 90 mins pre dep and is delivered to gate.

Had to laugh at your choice of Baileys and Bombay Sapphire.

Sydney Airport arrivals last week I paid $67 (and some cents) for a bottle of the coffee Baileys and the Bombay Sapphire.

They do.

It's a different store, after passport control but before baggage claim and customs. Prices seem to be the same, at least for what I buy.

I don't have any photos or quotes of exact prices with me, but I recall the duty free in JNB being very, very reasonable.

HKG used to be quite cheap for both alcohol and cigarettes (cigarettes in particular). Now they're so expensive on both fronts it's worth avoiding HKG on the way to Australia and flying via SIN (or non-stop out of China to AU).

Just avoid duty free altogether
Each to their own. I personally, always use my 2Lt limit. Usually a pre-order but I will be looking closely at SIN prices next time. NZ used to be good for DF booze, but no longer.

Like any shopping, it always pays to know what you're looking for and how much you would expect to pay. Some things are rarely discounted in sales (eg Apple products). So a combo of tax free and good exchange rates can deliver great bargains if you keep your eye out. Yes, otherwise avoid the plethora of DF rip offs.

Good luck to all who want to relieve themselves of their $$ by DF shopping.

I don't do duty free because I have not found the prices to be all that different to the high street and the things I want are always more expensive in DF than outside. The DF offering of cosmetics and booze is just uninspiring

Bombay Gin @ Cairns is AU$32.50 each if you buy a twin pack. (otherwise $33.99 for a single bottle)

AU$ 65.00

As this example shows - some great deals DF for alcohol. The Dan Murphy price is $68 per bottle. essentially half price DF.

Not into gin. But would the above be characterised as a loss leader?
If I can get some DF Volkl One powder skis at less than ex GST price I'll reconsider

Yes you can certainly snag some great deals in DF depending on what you desire and in certain locations - seek and Ye might just find.

I did discover that Apple products to be cheaper in OZ than the US recently

Did look for (Californian) Sonoma County and Russian River Chardy in DF last trip to/from US but was not stocked.

Wine is one of those items that is a ripoff DF. Especially in Oz. If you are looking to take a gift OS or worried that you can't get Aussie wine :) Best to go to the bottle shop and carefully pack in checked luggage.

My experience of US DF has been underwhelming. Especially booze. It's usually all cheaper in a supermarket. But you can get US made stuff sales tax free. But the current AUD-USD exchange rate isn't helping...

I know when Westfield takes over TBIT that the prices are not going to be competitive.
