Intl Duty Free Prices

Not into gin. But would the above be characterised as a loss leader?

Not a loss leader - just they're making less profit than they usually do. The same bottle of gin in Singapore is just $25 (which would still be making a profit for the seller).

Similar price savings are had on just about all spirits DF. Although as pointed out, wines and champagnes can often be cheaper at places like Dan Murphy.

Good luck to all who want to relieve themselves of their $$ by DF shopping.

I don't do duty free because I have not found the prices to be all that different to the high street

Not into gin. If I can get some DF Volkl One powder skis at less than ex GST price I'll reconsider
So your comment is more about the things you desire are not available/not good buying, which is somewhat different to what you initially advised about avoiding duty free altogether and reliving oneself of their $$$.

I agree with others, that the spirits are actually really good value (at least the spirits I buy) and wine I don't even bother looking sideways at. I rarely look at anything else.

When I go shopping DF or otherwise, I look for items I want to buy . I don't random buy because it's the cheapest mainly because I'm not interested in it. Invariably what I want to buy is not stocked. As I walk through DF I see the odd item whose price on the high street I'm familiar with and invariably I do not find the price compelling. Often more expensive. My shopping does not extend to liquor or cosmetics though I did drink a nice bottle of Sonona County (not into spirits Whisky) in Colorado and thought I would see if it was a DF stock. Unsurprisingly it wasn't.

I don't avoid DF (I think I said I don't do DF), just not interested in it generally and my suggestion is to avoid them. But I do occasionally look for specific items. And generally look at the price of Bose QC headsets to confirm my biases.

people can spend their $$ any way they wish and so I wish them luck, but I don't believe it's a good value proposition for me.

My best bargain was in NYC non DF. Calvin Klein suit perfect fit and 75% cheaper than exact same one in DJ. $$ saved about AUD$700

No you said.......

Just avoid duty free altogether

That was advice, not just a comment on what you do. Some people who don't regularly fly, may be swayed by that advice thinking it is true, but even though you now say that's what you do, there are good buys in duty free, so that's the reason I posted otherwise. A simple comment to avoid duty free may cost people money. Perhaps for people that don't drink grog, the advice may be reasonable, but at that comment, you didn't specify, but generalised.

I'm the same. I enjoy Bombay gin and it's around about half the price I'd pay otherwise. I've also bought headphones in duty free and although no screaming bargain, they were competitive but more importantly, they were there when I wanted/needed them. As much as you don't see the value in duty free for you personally, others (ie, me) does get good value regularly on an ongoing basis, so all I was doing was posing an alternative point of view to your original comment of "Just avoid duty free altogether".

I actually think the best advice came from the person who wrote that duty free is like any other form of shopping....know what you'd expect to pay and don't impulse buy thinking because it's duty free it must be cheaper, because a lot of the time, it is not!

One point to bear in mind for DF in SIN is that DF purchases for flts heading to Oz must be made 90mins prior to dep and goods collected at gate on boarding.

Mainstream spirits are always excellent value at SIN - they also regularly have specialty packaged Champs which I buy because just never see that packaging here - think gifts here.

Cruiserette has a fabulous attitude to DF shopping - price totally irrelevant - if item is unique and in the 'probably will never see again' category then it's a no brainer - we buy them by the wheelbarrow load.

Didn't I hear that DF shopping in DXB also excellent value? Pics pls some AFFer passing through.

How does BKK compare with SIN and SYD, for JW Double Black?

If going into Norway and don't have someone else's credit card, take duty free if you enjoy anything especially alcohol. This place is really picturesque and affluent but blisteringly expensive. Forget wine exists.

And if everyone wasn't aware what rogues and thieves outbound DF stores are - check these - then go check against Dan's or other discount liquor outlets:

My AA group session demanded I not post this but hey...

Off to AUH Friday, staying Park Hyatt as a Diamond for 3 nights. Unfortunately no lounge at this property. Given that I'll get the shakes within 12 hours of a rival after copious amount of plying aboard, question is:

1) load up in MEL per Uae allowance
2) buy upon arrival in AUH

Im thinking of buying my full allowance of 4 bottles of wine outbound in SYD (God forbid), but unsure if UAE applies some insane alcamahol taxes due to local regulations. Any experience/thoughts?

PS. CE, those pics and prices you posted earlier gave me a semi :)

Gold Member, If you are checking a bag you can bring stuff from the home cellar in your checked baggage (as long as it is within DF limits). No need to buy at airport.

In my experience the main thing with the UAE is you have to consume it in your own hotel room, or on private property (e.g. with friends).

Customs | Check-in & Passport Control | Airport Information | Abu Dhabi International Airport

Unless its in your sports drink bottle or camelback. No one will know.....Its a hot place....
