My son booked Bne-lax-Denver through qf with lax-Denver with United. Ticket on same prn.

My ? Is does he have to pick luggage up @ lax & go to united for check in. TIA
 
Yes.

In all cases he would need to do this; it wouldn't matter which two airlines it was.
 
Like Australia, customs clearance in the USA is always done at the port of entry (i.e. the first stop).

That answers part of the question, however QF and UA do have an interline agreement, so would think its a bag drop only as QF would check them in for both flights wouldn't they not?

Since both flights are on the same PNR, the QF staff in BNE should be able to tag bags to DEN, and probably also issue both boarding passes.

At LAX, the bags will need to be claimed but don't rip off the tags. Most US airports have a dedicated area near the exit of customs where connecting baggage can be dropped off without necessitating the full check-in procedures.

While QF will interline to UA for baggage if both flights are booked on the same pnr they don't have an IATCI agreement in place so cannot issue boarding passes. Baggage interline agreements and IATCI agreement don't necessarily go hand in hand.

To workaround in this case would be to enter the QF pnr in www.checkmytrip.com to obtain your UA booking reference then do online checkin with UA. Note than you most likely can pre-allocate your seats free of charge any time after you've made the booking - you don't need to wait for OLCI to open to do this.

QF in BNE will through check your bags BNE/xLAX/DEN but as mentioned above the bags will still come off on the carousel in LAX as all pax must clear customs at the first port of entry to the USA irrespective of what their final destination is within the US or even if travelling to another country such as Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean.

After you exit customs drop your bag at the transfer belt then exit TBIT (between T3 & T4) then turn right heading down to T7 or T8 where your UA flight will depart from. The correct terminal information will be displayed if you Google your flight number or retrieve your booking on the UA website.

If you already have your UA boarding pass in hand from OLCI, when you arrive at T7 or T8 just proceed directly through the TSA screening point to your gate. It may be worth double checking with either the UA gate agent or the customer service desk whether they have your bag tag details in their system so have your luggage receipt handy. It's a good idea to note the bag weight down at the time of checkin at BNE also or ask the CSA if they can write it on the baggage claim as it's useful information for the next carrier.

Without wanting to confuse things, subject to any recent changes with the modifications being done at TBIT, after collecting bags off the carousel, pass through customs. Then head RIGHT up a gentle ramp to the bag drop-off area. The tags will be checked there before the bag is put on the belt. (If you head LEFT you exit TBIT without passing bag drop-off).

Just beyond the bag drop-off are 'transfer' airline desks. If a BP is needed, you can get it there and do any other checking you need; much easier than fronting the counters at the UA terminal. Ask if there are any delays etc. if there is, time can be spent land side (if they want) rather than mooching round another gate lounge.

Then head off to the UA terminal (its large, with several entrances - one part used to be Continental pre merger).

'unlike' Australia? Connecting/transit passengers in AU (even for domestic sectors of international flights) are not required to complete immigration at the first stop, only at the port of entry.

They are one and the same for most flights now, there are only a few exceptions to this but your distinction is correct.

As to an earlier post yes interlining baggage does not always mean boarding passes too. Always ask the check in agent what they can and can't do and what the procedures are for your flights.

What times are these checkin counters near the bag drop open? I've been to LAX several times and I have never seen any staff on duty then ie shop's shut.

This has been prior to 0700 arriving ex QF15 or QF93.

Hmmm .. can't explain that. I had to use them a couple of times when running late for an AC or AS onwards flight from QF and there have been staff there. Last time was a year or so ago, though and can't remember if it was early or not.
 
Not trying to hijack, but it fits into this thread so hope OP doesn't mind me asking here - I'm interlining at LHR - arrive T3 from a JFKxHEL flight (on AY), then leave T5 to BHD (Northern Ireland) on BA, seperate PNR. I've had conflicting info from the airlines as to whether they can check through - what's the deal with the UK/Eurozone wrt baggage check through?

As AY > BA at LHR is a One World to One World *should* allow AY checkin at JFK to through check your bags to BHD.
