I reckon it was meant to be a joke. Virgin does this. We had to quickly accelerate just before landing as a sudden squall hit the tarmac. Up and circling. Pilot came on and said 'sorry, we were just about to land at the wrong airport'.

Indeed, quite apart from not making bomb jokes, while us frequent flyers might like the jokes and it can take the tension out of the chaos and delays, there are some first-time, nervous or stressed flyers who won't find them funny at all.
