Just back from a trip to New York (Business) and the food on the flight SYD-LAX with Qantas was some of the worst I ever been served in any class. If I was Neil Perry I'd be embarrased to have my name associated with it.
Is it happening with all airlines or is Qantas going through a bad patch

Ross, what was served (or have you tried to erase it from your memory, it was that bad??). I think Qantas need to review his contract, I've been disappointed on my last couple of flights as well.

Neil Perry is absolute cough, I agree LW, they should ditch him.

Was served and acceptable salad and soup, then what was supposed to be Chicked with Zucchini sauce, dry and tastless, then a dessert about half an hour off being stale no wonder that want to cover it in custard or sauce. Must say the wine selection was good though.
I emailed my complaint to FF on Monday when I got back and had the note that they were forwarding it to Customer Service who have yet to even acknowledge it.

RossMurdoch, write a letter as well and send it directly to the head / boss in customer service. Ring them up and find out who to send it to. Failing that, send it to the top of the chain of command. I've found that emails can go astray easily, but it's VERY difficult to dodge something that lands on your own desk and a letter is more formal.

Include your FF status and make a point that you fly regularly (and have also paid good money to sit in business class). Read my other post (re: Virgin Blue service, author d00t) ; if the customer services manager gets told directly and you make your case strongly, but politely, you stand a decent chance of something.

Have you ever eaten at his restaurant at Rockpool in Sydney? My favourite dish was "find the food on the plate" and the mandatory stop at Maccas on the way home!

Welcome, kpc to AFF ( :D I've been waiting to say that)...

That's why I wouldn't waste perfectly good money going to his restaurants...bad enough that I am paying him to feed me on board. Also another reason I try and use ODU's where ever practical to get a more substantive meal in J rather than "the box".

Harking back to the old days...the money or the box..show me the money!!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Go to Adelaide. :) There's some better restaurants over there for half the price of Neil Perry's in Sydney. 8) I can recommend a few to you if you'd like.

Got to agree Lindsay. I hate the box too.

Sooner have part of my money back and go hungry, or better still, to see that part of my fare go on something better and more 'well spent', like the Unicef 'change for good'. It wouldn't do some other people that I personally know such a bad thing to go hungry for a few hours ; those people have to do it everyday.

Chucking good money after bad by giving it to something like UNICEF might salve your delicate sensibilities, but it won't do squat to help people in real need. Just more cash in the trough for the UN snouts to squander.

That's one of the reasons I make good use of all the facilities at QC...it's only a snack on board usually for me...I try to time my flights around off-peak times, where possible, to be able to use ODU's and also now getting smarter at looking at aircraft types...now would run a mile from getting a Dash 8 to CBR.

I wouldn't say 'delicate sensibilities', I'd just call it human compassion. So for someone having to beg on the streets of Calcutta isn't real need, is it ? I think that it might do some of us some good to see 'how the other half live' and come down a peg or two. And before you go and worry yourself about 'offending my delicate sensibilities', yes, I have seen how they live and by God, I'm thankful for what I have and that I'm not living in a third world country where I'm starving to death because of war and famine.
I would hope that at least some of us have a heart left in this world ; those of us who are a lot better off than some others.

Just think about that tonight as you drive home - especially now that some of them won't have a home left after today's events kicked off in Iraq. I sincerely hope you enjoy your evening meal tonight, and everyone else, because some of them won't have one. And sleep well tonight, because they won't sleep well while missiles fly over their houses and bombs go off.

We are so lucky to have what we have in the western (first) world, I don't think that we should take it for granted.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, got the scars, got the little bits of metal in a plastic tube, courtesy of a nice surgeon.

Like I said, UNICEF, like all UN "snout in trough" operations, won't do squat. Some of your NGO agencies might actually make decent use of donated funds, but everything within range of the UN gets the very opposite of the Midas touch. Try asking UNICEF about the money for kids in Ethiopia that somehow turned into cases of scotch for those above the rank of Major. Whoops.

Your average Iraqi will likely sleep a little sounder tonight, missiles or no, because tomorrow they won't be at risk of summary execution, summary annexation of all of their assets, etc. Chances are the US military Governor of Iraq won't make the acquisition of chemical weapons a higher priority than the provision of fresh water & food.

"Goodnight, sleep well, and may your God go with you."

Now if only airlines would start collecting for sensible charities, like JPFO, I'd empty my wallet during every flight.

By JPFO I take it you mean www.jpfo.org ?

(Preservation of Firearms Ownership - an American organisation)

Is that why my TV relayed pictures of them trying to get out of the airports then ? The queues were worse than SYD at christmas time teamed with a QF strike.

My whole point seems to have been completely missed (again) which is that we're a damn sight better off than some people in the world who are less fortunate than us and we should be thankful for that. We have food, clean water and clothes on our backs at least.

Time to get back on topic (unlike FT's qantas threads) but with no moderator, almost seems strange :D

I used an ODU last night to fly MEL/BNE and was :D I did. The meal in J was excellent and a decent portion... give me extra leg room, confortable seats, more attentive service and real knives, forks and spoons anyday for 5K points...(not to mention the macadamia chocolates - brilliant for bribing Mrs LW2B to come and pick me up from the airport) :D .

Interesting I can concur with both Ross's original comments, and Lindsays latest. Last trip back from BKK-SYD-MEL (what a pain getting rid of the BKK-MEL flights) with SYD-MEL on domestic, I found the breakfast on the domestic sector far superior in quantity & quality to the breakfast on the BKK-SYD. I've heard it said (not sure if it was here on or on airlinequality.com) that QF is just plain inconsistent - on its good days it offers the best in the world, but on the bad ones it's right down their with the US carriers.

Just back from a trip to New York (Business) and the food on the flight SYD-LAX with Qantas was some of the worst I ever been served in any class

A colleague & I were travelling J Mel-Sin for a conference and were set upon by the FA. She clearly had me in her sights when she leaned over after the safety brief and asked me if I knew where my lifejacket was. I pointed to under the armrest and was told that I should pay more attention to the brief rather than talking with my colleague.
I've got to say I was quite stunned by her abruptness, but I convinced the other guy we should let it ride.
When the meal was served (broiled steak, I think) I cut into it and saw the dog meat rawness of it - my colleague had the same. We called the FA and had it exchanged for the fish except it had the same problem.
It was at this point we asked for the CSM but when we finally talked to him 40 mins later - we collared him on his way to First - he hadn't been told about our complaint.
I know the staff had just been cut back in the cabin but that really had nothing to do with the catering.
The food on Dom Bus/Econ walks all over the Int but that's been done to battle the food on VB.

To be fair though (and I am FAR from being a raving fan of QF catering), the BKK-SYD sector would have been at the end of a (roughly) 8 hour sector, with dinner served and then cabin lighting switched off. It was probably intentional that they had a low-key breakfast service, since anything lavish would have required more time and thus more "lights-on" time.

I personally prefer the extra sleep.
