Decided to splurge a little and go above my usual budget on this first ever visit to Fiji! I had originally booked a club suite without plunge pool using the Ambassador weekend night certificate on the expectation that my one-category upgrade would get me a pool suite, however as my stay approached I noticed room inventory was dwindling. When this Stay 3, Pay For 2 rate came up it allowed me to lock in a plunge pool room and hold onto my Ambassador cert for just AUD $140 extra for the whole stay, seemed a no brainer and worked out well given they were indeed fully booked and had no capacity for upgrades!
Arrived just after 5pm after the ~1hr drive from NAN (booked a transfer using the hotel's preferred provider Rosie Holidays, which worked well) and after a drum welcome and welcome drink in the lobby I was taken via buggy to the Club InterContinental up on the hill to complete the formalities. Arriving during happy hour perhaps made the process take a little longer however I was able to sit and enjoy drinks and canapés whilst they checked me in. The Club manager took me through all the amenities and given the lack of an Ambassador upgrade offered me the choice of 10,000pts or FJD $100 credit. Perhaps the points may have been better value but given the immediate benefit of the credit and my plans to dine at the resort anyway, I took the credit.
I was located in the furthest bure from the Club, that said I didn't mind this as it was higher up the hill (better views) and the distance was not bad anyway. At a purposeful pace it was just a couple minutes from my room to the club and around eight minutes from my room to the driveway/main building. That said if walking is a concern for you there is a fleet of ~15 buggies availalbe on demand and they will take you anywhere in the resort.
The suite was huge, perhaps a little dated in design but still clean and functional! Entry was into the living area with lounge, dining table, minibar and a TV. Through the sliding doors was the bedroom with a comfortable king bed and another TV. The bathroom was well-designed and instead of the standard Byredo amenities featured Pure Fiji white gingerlily fragrance instead. Shower included a rainfall shower head and although water temperature was great, water pressure could have been stronger. The room was stocked with plenty of Fiji Water (regularly replenished) and the minibar, complimentary for Club guests, included tea/coffee, soft drinks, juice and some local chips. One of the highlights of course has to be the outdoor area with Cleopatra bath, lounge, plunge pool and two deck chairs out on the grass, with a view out over the resort to Natadola Beach. Housekeeping was good and apart from the first night when I arrived late, also included turndown service. Wi-Fi was good (a necessity as my mobile roaming was pretty slow), TV featured Chromecast and a good variety of channels and the air-conditioning was perfectly cold!
Every guest receives a complimentary beach towel as a gift to use during the stay and take home afterwards - I think one of the primary drivers of this is to discourage guests from taking bath towels off-property and losing them. Given how isolated the resort is I think this is a smart idea, by giving away the beach towels they can instead invest in high quality, more expensive bath towels without the fear of losing them. An additional welcome amenity as a Platinum Ambassador was a plate of fruit in my room on arrival, however given the amount of food I had already on this trip the fruit plate went untouched!
The Club InterContinental here is a truly stunning space and fits their marketing spin of being a "resort within a resort" - you really do feel like you are in your own oasis removed from the hustle and bustle below. There is a variety of seating including indoor, undercover on the balcony or out in the sunshine beside the exclusive club pool. The club is open all day with breakfast from 7-10.30am, afternoon tea from 2-4pm and evening drinks from 5-7pm, with non-alcoholic drinks available in between (you could self-serve from the fridge although I'm sure the staff would be happy to bring to you as well). I really liked the pool here as it was never too busy, especially compared with the main resort pools below. The afternoon tea was very substantial, more than enough if you want to skip lunch and the evening service included a plate of hot canapés as well as a small buffet, themed differently each night.
Breakfast is included in every rate and you can dine either at the Club, the buffet at Sanasana or the adults only breakfast at Navo. Over my three mornings I tried all three and can see the benefits of each. Sanasana makes sense if you want a quick meal or an early meal as they start serving from 6.30am. Navo and the Club are similar in many ways, both sharing stunning views and an a la carte menu but the Club one has some 'premium' items such as freshly squeezed juices which are missing from Navo. I would say if you're staying in the Club maybe mix it up between the two, if you are not in the Club probably go for Navo as much as you can!
I also went to Sanasana for their Saturday night "Fijian Flair" dinner buffet - this was really good and allowed me to try lots of different local foods, my only complaint would be that the dish labels featured the Fijian names without any English explanations! This would be a good opportunity for the hotel to introduce some of the more exotic items to their guests without us having to Google each dish. I also went to Navo for a special dinner on the last night, this was fantastic with great service, singing waitstaff and an amazing lobster main course. Definitely do this if you can, and make reservations as soon as your plans are firm to avoid disappointment. For those with IHG F&B rewards, you can apply them against your bill here.
Staff across the board were great - at the start I got the feeling they were trying to set expectations of "island time" and to relax in case things took a bit longer than I would like but to be honest it all seemed to run pretty well, no orders were forgotten and things were attended to fairly quickly. The only thing that took a bit longer than I would have liked was Club check-in and then waiting for a buggy to take me and the bags up to the room, but I think they were genuinely wanting me to just chill and enjoy the evening drinks and canapés rather than rushing me to my room.
Just quickly on other facilities the hotel has everything you would need, a small gym (very busy every time I walked past!), a large Spa InterContinental complex, a kids club, lots of places for food/snacks, a Rosie Holidays tour desk and a couple of shops selling souvenirs and essentials. There is an ANZ ATM in the main building but the fee was EXTORTIONATE, FJD $15 even if you just wanted like $50 withdrawn! I thought it was pretty bad form from ANZ when they have made their Aussie ATMs free, I'm not sure if this is the norm in Fiji but if it is, it's probably best to avoid cash as much as you can. There are lots of activities (free and paid) throughout the day, all detailed in the monthly resort magazine and promoted on electronic signage around the property. You are also on Natadola Beach which is spectacular in its own right.
All in all a really beautiful stay and a nice introduction to Fiji. This was my second IC Resort stay having previously stayed at their Bali resort and although both are of course very different, I think I liked this one more. I would love to retun!
