I was a five points short of silver and at the end of the year contacted the call centre to see if they would comp me those points. They identified that I hadn't signed up for a double SC offer and retrospectively added them to my account in the new year. They also moved me to PS with the reassessment 2 years on. So went up a level and started the year with about 150 points.
 
My husband and I flew on 30th December last year, which is when his status re-assessment occurs. He needed those points to attain PG. The activity statement reflects the following:-

where * (which I have utilised instead of the funny character who’s name escapes me) indicates
“Status credits for this flight are not included in the current year total”


And ~

His status became Gold, his status re-assessment will occur on 31st December 2013

So unless there were some changes between October and December, the OP's luck is one out of the bag and ? actually possible . . . . .
 
It's because their silver status was comped after the reassessment date - so by luck and a bit of a loophole combined.
 
No doubt lucky but for me the point is that where there is intervention in the system unexpected things happen. Are flights on anniversary dates reviewed manually? Might explain what happened
 
Despite our combined analysis on how unlikely / lucky ... it had been for the OP, I would now time my end of year flight to be on the last day if possible..... just in case I'd be as lucky as the OP.

Of course, only if you need to top up to attain / requalify your desired level.

If not, this possible quirk does not matter much.
 
Don't know about it being documented, but it is a mechanism that I can see would have resulted in the outcome reported here.

Thank you oz_mark. After taking the leap to finally make a post on this site, I was starting to feel quite despondent by the responses that were implying I was lying or having a "wind up". Like most of you, I'm a commercial aviation enthusiast with no ulterior motives.

I'm no expert, but my take on the situation was similar to what has now been described in other posts - i.e. that the status credits, whilst not applied until the first day of my new membership year, still counted towards the membership year in which the flights were actually taken. Therefore, as you get to retain any new status for at least 12 months, and my account didn't change to WP until sometime during Day One of my new membership year, I was fortunate to gain the new status for 364.5 days + 12 months. Yes, seemingly lucky. But it's certainly not a "wind up"! Thanks again for your voice of reason ;)

Good luck to you Jabiru. I also reached Wp for the first time ever last year and have been enjoying the perks. Good seat selection, PB, business lounges and certainly personalised treatment on board (the odd drink from J when flying in Y), etc.
 
Nice one Jabiru. I don't think the system was intended to work that way, but I would happily take the bonus you appear to have got! :)

I don't think anyone was implying you were lying (I certainly wasn't and i know Samh004 wasn't either) but no one has seen that happen before hence the questions. Personally i think it is great you have got it for nearly 2 years. Hopefully you can retain it!

Allowing for different membership year dates, that has been the experience of two members of my family also.
So, a double win for the OP - but doubt that we can count on it happening across the board, alas. :)

I read is as qualify/requalify on the last day of your old membership year. It takes a day or two to process the FFP's and SC's meaning you end up with 364 days + 1 year at the new level.

This has always been the case....once you qualify for the next status level it's for the remainder of the current year and then the next full year - so much better to qualify ASAP into your new year than a few days before the end as you are not getting full value from your status earn (sometimes this cannot be helped).

The OP should've only got 1 year-1 day but instead got 2 years.

It would be great to try but the downside to this risky move is you only end up receiving status for slightly less than 1 year (as should be the case). Good to try if you run out of time and will qualify in your last month anyhow then push the flight back to the last day of the month - cannot hurt.

As a 7 YO anecdote, my initial WP qualification flight was taken 31 October 2005; it credited 3rd November with the "double dagger" and my status reassessment date was set to 31 October 2006.
