Heresy I know....

BA16 was full yesterday, and possibly overbooked due to the cancellation of BA10. A lot of people were given new BPs at the gate including myself - a nice shiny new BP for seat 63K.

However I was travelling to SIN with my employer. I didn't think it was nice to ask whether he could be upgraded too, so chose to downgrade myself in order to be seated together. We're both QFF Platinums, different PNRs since he's returning seperately, he OLCIed whilst I through-checked from MEL... Oh well, I hope the lucky sod they had to upgrade in order to restore me to my original seat in WTP enjoyed Club! Though it was still a nice feeling knowing that I was important enough to BA to be upgraded, oh little joys! :p

What would you have done in this situation? :)

In a TR to Jakarta I posted ages ago, I to had an upgrade(SIN/SYD) and my boss didn't, I offered him my seat once, he declined, I said - "see you in Sydney"

Can't be more fair than that :)

My immediate reaction would have been "thank you muchly", and then reality would have hit, and I would have politely declined, as you did.

Having said that, my employer would not have been flying in Y in the first place.;)

If my employer was responsible for paying most of the flights to achieve my current status I would have also declined or swapped seats.

I’d offer to swap seats, but if not, I’d take the upgrade. My mum was offered one once but declined it to sit with my sister, so I said I’d take it, and I did.

I have been upgraded several times while travelling with my family, the 'good looks' I get from FA's/CSM's when I let my wife and kids fly in "C" while I ride in the back is priceless.

The funny thing is the looks of the other passengers when my kids, who are late teens and 6'3" wearing t-shirts and shorts, board in "C"....but they have class and know more about flying than most people.

Everytime I have given my wife the upgrade I have got a personal thank you from the CSM. Good karma all around.

Cheers.

If it was someone from the office, I would have taken the upgrade as long as it was an aisle seat and possibly taken the it as a window seat; wouldn't see a necessity to sit with the other person

I would've first asked if my boss could also be upgraded (can't hurt to ask, particularly if he's OWE and they're upgrading several pax). Next I would've taken it, then offered it to him/her.

Unless of course we had specific business we had to discuss on the plane, and it was important we sit together. Every time I travel with colleagues, we try to sit together so we can chat/drink together, but it's not a big deal if we don't.

Cheers,
- Febs.

If you are both OWE, booked in same fare class on different PNRs..... why do you think YOU got the upgrade and he didn't?

Alphabetical?

Would be good to figure out if there is a method to this...

"I'm sitting with my boss. Could you please upgrade him instead and I'll sit in his seat".

Might work depending on the gate agent for a double upgrade. Plus would be a great way of trying to impress the boss. Could get a bit tricky though if upgraded at the gate and they're next to you... Instead I'd probably just had them the boarding pass and keep theirs.

PS - of course this should be done in a way as to not hold up the boarding queue !

Oh yes the boarding queue was chaos, but I was passed along to another agent who was in her own corner sorting this and similar stuff out.

My boss was with me when it happened. He did urge me to take the upgrade. However he'd also changed his flights to be on the same plane so I didn't feel good accepting the upgrade. Didn't think about accepting it then offering the upgraded seat to him..........

Now why couldn't this have happened on my return when I'll be flying solo! :p:lol:

His surname starts with J and mine T so I'm not sure it's alphabetical. We also booked at almost identical times.

The only difference was that he had used OLCI when it opened, whereas I checked in at the QF domestic terminal in MEL. And perhaps me attaining WP a month or so before he did? He'd also not flown BA in 5 years whereas I'd done a few long hauls with them the past year.

Anyway it's all random is all i can say. For instance the reason why the guy who was sitting in my original seat got his upgrade (gate agent boarded the plane to upgrade him, can't see any status or indeed any FFP in his bp either) was because I wanted to be back in that seat.

Somehow I don't think this is an issue for QF009

You did a very nice thing - of course, munitalP's suggestions is another way to go - give the boss dibs on an upgrade for brownie points, and if they decline, let the chips fall where they may. ;)

On the other hand, if this were to happen in a spousal situation (especially where there is a tier discrepancy between said couple), the potential for awkward hilarity ensues. :D

Certainly not in our family djfuzz!!!!!! I actually enjoy flying with them in Y on most occassions as we all put up the seat rest and lounge about like we do at home.

I am WP and my wife SG, have always been treated as a couple, no differential upgrades ufortunately.

'Tis not as random as may be thought.

"Proactive Onload" is a searchable term. Whether BA use something similar I know not.

I guess the wheels spun your way.

Well I wouldnt have given up the upgrade (mind you my boss and I are likely to be in J not Y+ so it is not such a massive upgrade to F from there).

I have a trip coming up with a colleague and we have already agreed that we wont sit next to each other on the flight...
