I declined an upgrade to Club World!

'Tis not as random as may be thought.

"Proactive Onload" is a searchable term. Whether BA use something similar I know not.

I guess the wheels spun your way.

Does altea calculate seats based on past $spend like others, or does it somehow link the oneworld status to spend perhaps so there's a systematic way to check most valuable pax?

I have a trip coming up with a colleague and we have already agreed that we wont sit next to each other on the flight...

+1 to that with most of my colleagues! (nothing personal though, just we all have our routines).

There was some heavy discussion around how op-up's are handed out by QF's systems in this thread which should answer your question.

As for the upgrade, I would have said stuff the boss and taken it. You've gotta be rewarded for your work sometime, even if it's only the occasional upgrade ;)

The world as I know it has ended. QF009 declining an upgrade must mean bizarro world is now the new way forward. :D

Seriously though I wonder what the etiquette guides say about this? Still I would've taken the upgrade and let the boss enjoy Y. When my boss used to fly with me I guested him into the QP because he wasn't even a member. He didn't fly much and it wasn't worth it for him.

Whilst I never got an upgrade, I always did get better seats and would never have given them up.

I really don't want to advance too much further in my career which does affect my thinking in this regard. If you want to climb the corporate ladder then a bit of cough kissing is, sadly required.

Reminds me of the QF ad a few years back. The standard business-esque ads they used to run with the same two guys. They were using quick check and the work mate was rabbiting on about cough so the guy at the machine put their seats far apart from each other. When boarding the annoying one asked why they weren't seated together and the other just snubbed it off as a 'flight must be full' thing.

I get along great with most my colleagues, but the thought of having to sit next to one for 14 hours or so is not high on my 'must do' list. Fortunately, my work trips tend to involve us flying different flights and meeting up at the end destination. I'm quite happy to do it that way and it would save any un-necessary awkwardness that QF009's situation may place me in (I'm WP, and bar all but one employee here, most our staff don't even have FF accounts or are bronze).

Presumably he heard a rumour that the champers in J was a non-vintage!

ISTR there was an Ansett Ad similar to that (Late 2000?).

When I went to Europe and back it was agreed at the start there was no need to seat next to each other during the flights, especially if we all wanted aisle seats.

Perhaps you're right. It may have been when AN did their quick check in (well before QF). It was a long time ago, so it's possible to have been them (Just thought it may have been QF).

Either way, I thought it to be a very clever ad:)

Yeah, with the underling who did the seat selection looking back 2 or three rows to his Boss and "shrugging".

bingo. that's the one:) If only the underling had been bumped to J. Much better look on the boss' face :D

I would have taken the upgrade - no hesitation. Was not my decision - was the airline's. If one of my employees had done it, I would not have thought anything worse of them - I would probably have thought that they were was too sucky if they had declined.

QF009, did the boss know you declined the upgrade (sorry if that's been posted already) at the time? If so then at the time (providing there was no compelling reason for you to sit together - e.g. work discussions and the like), then I reckon the boss should have encouraged you to take the upgrade. Selfish to do otherwise.

I would have taken the upgrade.

Don't know what would happen if I had a girlfriend or spouse but on my recent Oneworld award with my father I was told not to refuse any upgrades if offered.

Yep he was with me at the gate when it happened. This happened at the boarding gate. When we made the booking, he did make sure that we travelled to SIN on the same plane, even altering dates slightly in order to do so (last minute booking = scarce availability) and securing seats next to each other. So it did create some sort of expectation that we'd be doing work-related stuff on the plane, even though he actually encouraged me to accept the upgrade.

Moral of the story: I'll fly directly ex-MEL next time. :p

Aaah, boss not so selfish then. In fact, quite the opposite. Good form from you to decline, but agree you should try and avoid a situation where you need to make that decision.
