hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

Just got an email to say the spend required to keep Star alliance gold is dropping to $48,000 from October 14th
I was just going to get a new credit card but that will take the spend of my HSBC card - so many decisions

My partner and I both have the HSBC *A card and selected SQ for our gold status. Must be honest, having flown them long haul in premium about 8 times in 18months, we really don't see much benefit as a SQ Gold flying on SQ. *A Gold including SQ/KF Gold all board at the same time and at the same time as premium economy without status., security queues are the same, etc.
There doesn't seem to be any preference towards SQ/KF Gold vs *A Gold.

But since we have qualified again, we're thinking of selecting Aeroplan for our status since we'll have a couple NA trips next year and hoping we can use the eUpgrade credits and use family pooling (plus miles don't expire).

The only issue is not being able to convert AMEX points into Aeroplan without having to go via Marriott.

We also have the AMEX platinum which gets us lounge access anyways even if we didn't have any *A status and we never need additional baggage.

Anything else to consider Aeroplan vs SQ KF?

Buying miles on Aeroplan is a big plus.

Having gold status means pretty much instant answering by the call centre (compared to two hours wait for non-status).

And personally I think finding partner availability is much easier on Aeroplan… plenty times Aeroplan showed results when ‘star alliance’ and ‘partner’ searches on SQ showed nothing (and this is for star alliance availability, not the non star partners!)

I wasn't expecting to keep this card beyond the current first year as I wouldn't make the spend (better put on my other cards). But with the hurdle drop I checked my coughulative spend and its already $46K. Score.

So now its just a judgement of whether I want to spend the $450 fee.

I'm currently on KF Gold, and in much the same boat as @paros_fan - redeem SQ in business, so Gold doesn't add much. Inclined now to Aeroplan Gold; I've been a member since 2014 and buy miles regularly but as I plan a few AC redemptions on their non-Alliance partners next year, a priority access to their call centres per @MEL_Traveller might be useful. Then again, KF gold will get me into VA lounges, which I may not otherwise get next year. Not something I'd chase, but if it comes anyway, will be handy.

@MEL_Traveller , if I nominate AC for my SA airline on the renewal, do you think I'll get it for 2 years, or is that only for a first nomination on the card?

I’m not certain. But I *think* you get gold for the remainder of this year and the. the year after. I think that’s just how it works… same same as Qantas.

Aeroplan also gets you into the VA lounges.

The time saving for the call centre is phenomenal. And it means you can then start building some creative routings which you’d otherwise have to wait 2+ hours to get through on.

The annual fee has gone up to $499? I won’t unfortunately be renewing for next year… $499 for silver is probably not worth it. But there might be options such as getting a family member/partner to sign up and get another couple years :)
